Melda vs Oxford EQ

This may not be useful but I found it interesting.

Out of curiosity I was comparing the high pass filters of various EQs. I ran an MOscillator at D1 (36.7 hz) around -9.7 db and compared a HP 36 at 60 hz of MBandpass and UAD Oxford Sonnox EQ (https://www.uaudio.com/uad-plugins/equa ... rd-eq.html).

The output is pretty much identical. Adding a phase inverted signal of one completely cancels out the other. Well there is a tiny -70db but it is as good as gone.

Comparing with other EQs I have, it is vastly different. Maybe great minds think alike .

From what I understand - which is little - the fundamental math behind many FX is generic - like the major scale. There is bound to be overlap among the various plugins. There will be differences but not everything is built entirely from scratch. Specifically regarding this, I don't know. What I do remember is that even some of reaper's built-in plugins hold up well in some regards to top-dollar third-party options but in other ways it falls short.

But if you're in the mood for more experiments try comparing the various bell curve filters of Melda, eg "peak" vs "peak analog".

Maybe there are differences to spot when comparing analog emulations.

Right, masitito. I was thinking that you might get larger differences with sampled emulations like those from Acustica Audio than when comparing among algorithmic EQs.

Personally, it's less about the difference in sound and more about the interface, the developer, and the sales end like package discounts, update fees, etc. I don't know enough about how plugins are made to say much more but I do know that I have several soft synths and a couple guitars. They all basically do the same thing but there are enough differences to warrant having options.

For example, does the Oxford EQ have Melda's modulation? Does Melda need an external DSP? Do you already know how the Oxford EQ performs on a certain source which will then save you time when on a deadline? I don't know, maybe I'm just not convinced that one EQ over another will make or break a project. What I do know is that, over time, the differences that I look for have added up to where I'm with Melda now and not somewhere else.

Eqs are about the Curve. If you get the Q curve the same it should sound the same.
