Maybe it’s just easier cash than other types of legacy recreations. It’s just a GUI on top of a port of a sample-player and its libraries from custom hardware to desktop computers.
I played one at a store once, and I was impressed with the distortion sounds, but that was back then, today’s distortion opportunities are much wider in both hardware and plugins, and the rest of the sounds didn’t exactly catch my attention.
But here’s a thread of people who seem interested
How does it compare to the Korg M3? I bought the M3m for the KARMA. The most time spent with the machine powered on in my “studio” was probably just starting it to warm it up in an attempt to dry out the defective touch panel... and the time I spent actually replacing the touch panel.
I can’t say the M3’s sounds inspire me at all (nothing in it impressed me like the few distortion sounds I remember liking on a Triton ages ago, but maybe that’s the distortion of recollection and changing tastes over my lifetime). The KARMA is a bitch to work with, especially in terms of working with my DAW due to MIDI loops imposed by the fact that I have the module version of the M3 instead of the keyboard version (I had to connect a stand-alone MIDI controller to it to avoid a MIDI loop, and it’s not controllable via my DAW as a result).
It would be SUPER weird to me if Korg ever released a Legacy Collection type recreation of the M3. It didn’t sell nearly as well as a Triton, as far as I can tell, because they didn’t keep revising it or selling add-ons for it (and they absolutely abandoned development of the FireWire drivers, so I never bought the FireWire EXB card).
The M3 was weirdly positioned alongside their much more expensive and feature-filled, top-of-the-line Kronos. And then they also undercut it shortly after with the cheaper and feature-reduced Krome. I never understood their thinking with all this...
M3 also came out when software studios had become THE thing. Triton didn’t have that same competition, so I imagine end user perception of them is much more affectionate toward the Triton just by default because it had more room to sell units.
