Randomization of Control Values in MSF

I just watched the 30 minute video on creating MSF devices. It was good that it pointed out that scrutiny for controls that should be exempt from randomization should be undertaken. Since I never use randomization (except by accident!), I never gave this part of the process any thought.

I was pleased to see that in the template I had used for multiple devices that almost all the title-enable switches on the FX page marked as non-randomizable. This is exactly how it should be, IMO. But I noted also that the controls within groups had their values randomized even when the group was disabled. This is exactly how it should not be, IMO.

If the group (i.e., the effect on the FX tab) is turned off, it serves no purpose to randomize since the result will not be audible. However, if the user then decides to turn on the effect, the initial settings will likely be some wild randomization that often makes little sense. It would be nice if when first turning the effect on we’d get the default settings, I would argue. So, I'd say: skip randomization of control values within disabled MP groups.

Thoughts?

I agree, but I'm also someone who never uses randomization.

I agree with that too. It would also be nice if we could create a "lock" multiparameter button that locks all the parameters in the parameter list. So we need a "lock" parameter for each controller.

That would mean "I understand that this is an FX and it should work like that", in other words it would require an actual AI :). And you can actually lock things. But manually. There are no locks there, since each device is different, so ...

I think it doesn't matter if it's FX or not. If a panel is turned off, the buttons are turned off, the randomizing of the buttons should also be turned off.

Well, for this reason I create separate "randomize" buttons on each page and then again in the panel. So you can work your way through each step.

Actually I mean: If you have several lock-multiparameters, the lock-symbol should also be controllable by an mp-button.
Anyway, it would be nice to protect several MPs from (global) randomness at the same time.

I does not matter. We could be talking about an LFO as easily as an effect. If it's off by default and you turn it on out of the blue, it would be far better to have it start out with some reasonable settings, as the defaults are likely to be.
