I've deleted and lost my edit :-(

I'm pretty certain it's unrecoverable, but worth a shot in the dark.

I've been working on a largish edit (+25 tracks)to stick up as my first 'tracktion in action' contribution, but went horribly wrong last night. For some reason, on the projects page there have been two edits for this particular project for a while (i don't remember creating a new edit) - both titled the generic

'new edit 1, created as default edit' in addition to a numerical code.

I wanted to tidy this up in case it lead to confusion as I was going to create some new edits of the project. These two edits had different time lengths (by a few seconds) - so i assumed (yes, without checking the numerical file codes ) that they were different. I opened up one edit, checked it was the one i wanted, and deleted the other from the projects page.

Now the remaining edit file won't open - nothing there. zilch. They were obviously the same edit file, but don't know why they were listed twice.

Now it's gone, and obviously not in the recycle bin.

I'm not going to get it back am I...

I've just lost a whole project in a similar fashion, by just typing a new name in the project name box. I don't know how to help you as I couldn't help myself then but I whish the Tracktion dev wouldn't stay silent on this as I feel this to be a serious problem.
I haven't even worked with Tracktion since, as I don't trust it anymore and went back to music studio (which I totally hate, but I won't loose projects with it at least). A simple "I'll look into it" from the dev would go a long way in reasuring me (and others?).

I think it would be nice if this was changed so that deleted files go into the recycle bin or so that we can have the option of deleting to the recycle bin.

I hate to offer the idiot solution, but I've often been happily surprised at what a simple system restore will recover. Assuming your machine/os supports it, and a restore point was created at the right time to recover a good portion of your work, it might be worth a try.

yeah system resore is the obvious, but was going to be the last resort incase there was anything else i could do - means i need to back up all my other recent files, which is no biggie I suppose.

A place for deleted files to go to is a good idea for file management belt and braces style, and has ben mentioned before. However i don't see my problem as a result of failures of T, more me rushing rather than thinking.

A clearer way of naming / changing files would be nice, and has come up several times in T2 threads. But the key lesson is to back up before making changes. It's just sometimes difficult to assertain what a 'big' change is when you're not sure of the consequences of doing something. That, however, is software in general, not T.

by the way MadatGod, I'm not at my music PC at the moment, but are restore points created automatically when the machine is powered down? That would be my only hope.

I don't know if they are created when you power down, but they are created automatically on my machine, and pretty frequently.

You shouldn't need to back up all you stuff though. If it works, you can archive the edit, burn it to a CD, then undo the restore. At least that's how it works on my machine, with winxp.

I may be wrong but I didn't think that System Restore dealt with "ordinary" files, that is, files created by applications.

As for automatic creation of System Restore points, AFAIK they are not created when you power down. But I think they are created after the PC has been inactive (no keyboard/mouse action) and perhaps idle, for 20 or 30 minutes (but only one a day). I know if I leave my PC for that period of time one is created.

As for your edit, perhaps, if you ask him nicely, Jules could have a look at the file and recover it?

I'm sure you guys tryed this but, make sure you check the actual folder where you saved your song. Just because it doesnt show up in the Tracktion browser doesnt mean its not there. A lot of times its still in the folder.

Sorry I cant be of more help, but I've never had a big problem with loosing files.

unfortunately you're not. Only prog. files etc are affected so no luck in finding my deleted edit.

tried that but T seems to be pretty efficient at getting rid of 'unwanted' files.

how could he do that? if i've deleted an edit in the projects page then surely it's no longer in the file...if anywhere somewhere else on the hd? Just curious.

hopefully lesson learnt and this is a one off.
