That's a pretty biased comparison, because your putting against each other Bitwig in controller assignment mode which is heavily data driven (Excel-like right part of the screen) and makes everything drenched in green hue vs. a timeline + mixer.
Perhaps something like-for-like?

Bitwig UI kinda reminds cheap plastic toysoonabe wrote: Sun Feb 02, 2020 9:37 pm I find Bitwig very uninspiring and looking like it was designed back in the 90s, but it's a matter of tastes I guess.

Being a huge fan of the DAW I have to agree somewhat - especially how the clips are drawn (I think it's that notch in upper-left corner...), automation header and how device nesting is represented. Especially the latter looked much better in v1.x (obviously that's a very personal preference)
v1.x

v2+

The UI in the pic you posted has adopted slight 3D element which can be seen in major leading company's UI/UX design concept more and more recently. Though I don't like orange, by today's standard I can evaluate this UI theoretically better than ableton's 'we are forefront of the new dawn of UI in 2013'.

I left Ableton for Bitwig and never looked back. Well ok once I did, and quickly realized I could not give up the many advantages of Bitwig to go back to Ableton.

it's not just about how it looks, there is no mixer view in AL and can't be put all kind of devices into the tracks(MIDI generators, instruments, fxs etc.) and all of them can be controlled(macroing stuff) from the top-level container together

and it supports MIDI channels other than one in its inner routing ... was a huge pain point in AL to me

Sorry, Bitwig might be great but it looks awful and I hope this is not the tendency in upcoming DAWs. There are better ways to use 3D emulations on UI elements, like the Reason Rack to name an example.
I personally like Ableton's UI way better though it isn't perfect either. We might start a UI war here or maybe unite and project our hate together towards Cubase's UI?
just kidding, it's all a matter of tastes I guess
