My Cubase SL1.06 of 17 years exhibits a similar behaviour (XP). I save my work press the X and wait. All windows close apart from the main container. My impatience gets the better of me and I press the X again. Usually I then get an error message.

Does that even support VST?

Ok, i see now that Cubase SL1 is from 2002, so, yeah, it's newer than the VST versions. Slightly.
Not sure why it was mentioned as an example here though. It's obvious that the discussion is about new versions, and, the window management has changed over time, I think, so, doesn't make much sense to take Cubase SL1 into the equation here.

It takes up to 30 seconds for Cubase to write it's data when it closes. Does your Cubase respond after that time or do you have to use the Task Manager?paulquk wrote: Thu Feb 06, 2020 8:45 pm Anyone got a solution to this problem? I am on Win 10 when I hit the close button on the program it stops responding it tends to be after I have had a heavy session open

I have just left it to see if it will close but I always end up closing via task managerGoogly Smythe wrote: Thu Feb 06, 2020 11:08 pmIt takes up to 30 seconds for Cubase to write it's data when it closes. I know the problem too!
Sometimes it really seems to take a long time until Cubase finally quits.
The recommendation is always to reset the settings. However, the recommended way of using a key combination (Ctrl+Shift+Alt) when starting Cubase seems to no longer work in the current versions. You have to rename (or delete) the settings folder manually.

It's not something you can get around. It's how it was designed - there's a project document & bottom layer, the "core" of Cubase. You just need to close both, one after the other. It's pretty similar in Bitwig or Studio One, but they don't "exit" to what looks like Windows with additional options bar on top, but to their own "desktop" where you can access project files, change settings. It's the same principle, but designed in a smarter, less visually disorienting manner.paulquk wrote: Thu Feb 06, 2020 8:45 pmAnyone got a solution to this problem? Also you should avoice force-closing any software, unless it hung up. You might lose important data this way!

Yeah, I had that as well. Only with Cubase 9 though, IIRC. Cubase 9.5 was fine here.4damind wrote: Fri Feb 07, 2020 9:59 am I know the problem too!

Yes, but the more I think about it... what has changed is that I use a lot more VST3 versions today. But especially with VST3 I have some plugins that sometimes cause problems. So I don't want to exclude the possibility that's also something related to (VST3) plugins.

tbh I found the odd rogue plugin that was causing Cubase to hang, most recently was Kontakt after an internal crash with it. Cubase would operate after the crash, but no sound, and when you go to close it, all the windows close apart from the master "shell" window, and that needed to be killed in task manager.
I doubt it's a VST3 only issue, its probably a dodgy plugin you are using , i'd start to isolate them.
