Virtual MIDI - can "select middle-C" NOT follow the MIDI device virtualized?

I thought I had found a great way to allow 4- or 5-octave keyboard shift - create a virtual MIDI device and then set it's middle-C. Unfortunately, it seems when that is adjusted, it also adjusts the MIDI device it virtualized... :( :(
