Wild guess: Choose two points on the surface of the Earth. Draw a line between them, then plot surface height along the line. Use the result as a waveform.
I tried doing this using GPS many years ago, but I live in fairly flat terrain so the waveform hadn't much amplitude.

Actually, what I was aiming for was scanned synthesis*, playing the Earth's surface as if it were a phonograph record without grooves, just contours.
Seemed like a cool idea at the time but the result went kind of like this:
