Hi, I'm watching a tut on the midi command method and they say the intro's are at C-1, I have an 88 keyboard but I do not have C-1, in fact this is the first time I've heard of C-1...the beats start at C0, which I can handle...finding Mdrummer very difficult to work with at the mo

...the nomenclature for middle "C" is not fixed by convention, there is Yamaha vs Roland et al...so it's a pia and I keep a note on clients as to which one they "use"...(sigh)..

Hi, not sure how your post is relevant to me my friend..probably because I'm a thicko, but thank you for your answer.. another problem I'm having is the tut says C-1 will play an intro with minimal complexity and has an arrow pointing with the instruction midi channel 10, if I do this I get nothing, if I change to midi channel 1 I get a sound but what I get is a steady beat, not an intro with minimal complexity...

you need to know/figure out which system is being used by your setup, i.e. C3 or C4, the rest of the key "numbers" follow from there. Try a search on "MIDI middle C".

Middle C is MIDI note 60
88 key piano goes down to MIDI note 21
MIDI keyboard goes down to MIDI note 0 (on my 49 key MIDI keyboard I push the octave transpose button three times to get down there).
If we say middle C is C4 (so called 'scientific pitch notation') then MIDI note 0 = C-1.

Yes, plus, depending when the tutorial was published, Melda has recently - since version 14, I believe - made MIDI Note 60 = C4. Prior to that, I'm sure MDrummer used something else.
If you consider "middle C" to be C4 - most instrumentalists do - then there is indeed no C-1 on a piano; the lowest note is A0. However, in the wonderful world of MIDI, there are 128 possible notes and, since many of those would be inaudible or otherwise musically useless, several samplers use those ranges for 'switches'. An example would be changing the articulation of a saxophone or making the drums flam, etc.
Like others have mentioned, ~262Hz being called 'middle C' is pretty standard whereas calling it 'C4' or 'C3' is where conventions diverge. Just keep keymashing until you find the result you want but it should be in the context of C4 for Melda now.
Hope that helps.

shadowfax,
Does your keyboard have transpose buttons? I know very little about keyboards, but I have a cheapo $100 unit, and even that one has up and down transpose buttons, which shift what midi key is triggered by the physical keys.

Blimey!!! thanks for the input guys, I'm not technically minded, just a muso...when I bought Mdrummer I never expected anything like this, all the other drum vst's I have just work...Mdrummer is obviously very powerful so will get my head down and try and figure out whats goin on...thanks again..
and yes it does have a transpose facility..never needed to use it but will look into it now...
