Well, the Casio patent from back then makes a strong statement in favor of cosine. I recommend reading it.
You can probably create any sine based waveform with cosine, too. Getting the phase right might be tricky, but I think it’s possible.

yes , I know casio pd was originally using a co-sine and it's great that zebra does to 
I was suggesting that the pd could benefit from a sine also ( negative value on pd parameter for example ) .
