If it was free, they would need to take away the ability to upgrade from it. They are actually really good at letting you upgrade from old versions without additional costs - i.e. the upgrade price from K8 is the same as the upgrade price from K11.Magnut wrote: Tue Mar 10, 2020 4:50 pmThat's the point. No problem with discontinuing support. But don't stop me from using it. Make it free at best if it doesn't matter anymore anyways.Mace404 wrote: Tue Mar 10, 2020 4:44 pm It's understandable they stop the support on those old plugins/libraries.
The problem is they stop you from using them by preventing activation.

What about the Kompakt-Libraries, that still work in current Kontakt versions? The samples are still fine after all these years and the registration process is fully automated! There is absolutely no reason to discontinue these products.
How can someone defend NI, after Massive X and all that insubstantial Komplete-Updates. Sorry ... I dont get it

Then don't get it. Also, I don't think it's really about defending NI, it's about being a bit reasonable towards a company who's holding a candle for a business, which is very hard, if you want to make some money. Also, I don't think anyone benefits by talking the biggest player into the ground, especially when it comes from a few individuals, just like here.audiot wrote: Tue Mar 10, 2020 4:58 pm How can someone defend NI, after Massive X and all that insubstantial Komplete-Updates. But, the most important thing I always wonder about is how people don't even take note of solutions, while being busy to put the hammer on a company. That's something I don't get, and something I just can shake my head about.

that is/was my beef with this... ending access to sample libraries. they can do what they want... it is their business but it is very bad they deny use of libraries to the owner of such libraries that are good (resolution wise lol) 'til the cows come home although i am not shocked... they are not the first to screw the customer for a buck. i am done here cheers
p.s. it is one thing if they were going out of business but they are not. they 'seem' to be just saving time and effort (and a dollar) and again the customer comes out on the losing end.

I do not expect my vintage car to comply with modern regulations,no,but I do expect it to keep working if I maintain and repair it. And I do hope that my government will allow it to be licensed for use on a public road.mschenkel wrote: Tue Mar 10, 2020 4:44 pm
We are talking more about 15/20 years old software that compared to a car is like saying: do you expect a 70/90 years old car to run, comply with modern regulations about exausts, safety rules, safety belt and so on?
Cmon...
But my boxed version of Kontakt 2 will just cease to function after May 31st if I ever uninstall it, and it acts as the base product for my other upgrades which makes selling them more difficult.

If you rely on total recall, or at least like the idea, it doesn't matter how old a certain piece of software actually is.
And while scrapping backwards compatibility for technical reasons might be ok, this isn't the case here.

The only thing I really use from NI are their effects really and Massive. Rest of the stuff is kinda lost on me. Oh and Absynth for atmosphere pads and the like.
They make decent hardware though sadly.

How? The way I understand it, you just sell the upgraded version plus the upgrade.dellboy wrote: Tue Mar 10, 2020 5:05 pm But my boxed version of Kontakt 2 will just cease to function after May 31st if I ever uninstall it, and it acts as the base product for my other upgrades which makes selling them more difficult.

Nah, while I absolutely don't like NIs behaviour, this isn't the case.dellboy wrote: Tue Mar 10, 2020 5:05 pm.

What about when you want/need reinstall OS for whatever reason?mschenkel wrote: Tue Mar 10, 2020 4:57 pm They are just preventing any new install; if it is working today, as long as your hardware is running as it is today, you won’t have any issue

Then you're f****ed, as has been stated by NI.
You're also f****ed when something in the plugins relies on libraries which are removed with a future OS upgrade, which always is possible. Or, when there's any kind of incompatibility. As those old products don't get upgrades anymore, they're way beyond the support phase anyway.
Don't get me wrong, this sucks for the people who still use such old plugins or libraries. But, frankly, I wonder about how many people we're actually talking about here.

Yes, my impression as well.chk071 wrote: Tue Mar 10, 2020 4:45 pm Doesn't appear to me that people are looking for solutions though. Rather negative, destructive bombardment.
This is at least in parts a kind of sh*t storm by the usual NI bashers.
NI will not even notice this drama.
It happens more or less every month here in this forum.
So what...
The business of NI will be virtually unaffected.
That's life, accept it.
