This is slightly tracktion related since I will be running tracktion on my new audio only pc. Here's the story... In the past few years I find that I'm doing more and more recording and mixing using just the computer. Right now my computer is a Dell Laptop. It's very capable of doing most of what I want but I want to build a rackmount pc that is dedicated for audio production. That way when my wife wants to check her email I don't have to stop recording. Do any of you have any links or advice on what parts would work best for audio? I'll be using Propellerheads Reason, ReWire, FL Studio, Cubase SX2, Tracktion, Adobe Premier, and a host of VSTIs. I already own and use the previous programs on my laptop. I want to put together a powerfull system that is capable of recording, composition, film scoring, and post production. I am currently living in China so I have access to a number of pc vendors and manufactures. I want to build the kit myself from the ground up so any advice on motherboards, processors, video cards, etc... will be much appreciated.
Thank you all!
Doug

No, I know you can't buy this in China, but you can check their spec and build one yourself. They are well known for building system that works.

Thanks! Just the kind of info I'm looking for. I've found a few articles online but most of them were out of date.

I can only help a little bit.
-Asus (I am a believer)
-More RAM than you are willing to pay for. (The amount of RAM demanded by future plugs is on a sharp rise)

firstly, these sites should prove darn useful:

Build your PC
I guess the big question is budget: If the sky's the limit then go for some Extreme Pentium with gigabytes of Ram and a SCSI raid hard drive system.
If not then think seriously about a new generation AMD athlon 64 (cooler and arguably more powerful than Intels latest) based system.
I'd second Asus boards as the best around though had no problems at all with MSI either (watch out for Epox and PCChips though...)
Try for a gigabyte of Ram at least, will give XP plenty of elbow room to run all these lovely plugs.
As for hard drives... Unless you want to pay the premium for SCSI drives that still seem to be thought of as 'Pro' then I'd plump for a couple of SATA drives; it seems most mid range upwards mother boards have SATA Raid included which could be useful if you want to play with it in the future (faster access=more tracks/better for video or more security with data mirroring).
Any low end card will do for graphics, something like an nvidea based fx5200; dual screen capable and passively cooled so quiet...
Which leads me to http://www.silentpcreview.com , all you need to know regarding quiet PC components.
