Possibly played at the wrong speed.

fond memories of him playing some electronic/dance thing at a variety of speeds before giving up and asking the listener to decide what sounded best...

hell, that's the first time i've laughed out loud since I heard the news.

strange thing is though, my first thought was not all the great bands he's broken over the years but all the strange, quirky stuff that hardly set the world alight yet totally shaped my outlook on music. Off the top of my head, stuff like Buttsteak, the LP of astrology inspired songs, Boone Stigall, half man half biscuit, ivor cutler, the eggs ("government administrator"!), the punk west side story stuff, Beat of the Traps(?)...

Anyone else remember him on Desert Island Disks? How he heard Orbisons 'Its Over' on a railway platform one foggy morning and just started crying his eyes out? I think I know how he feels...

Rest in Peace.

Yes he will be sorely missed. Every nation should have someone like John Peel on the radio.

He was like chlorine in the pop radio gene pool. For most of us in the US, real radio died a long time ago. I suspect it will in the UK as Clear Channel Inc begins its airwave plunder and feeding frenzy there. (I believe as early as 2002 they owned some or all of Kiss FM, Jazz FM and XFM).

Welcome to our world Britain. Oh well at least you will still have the pirates...

On the other hand perhaps this is right. The era of walkmans has given way to the era of iPods. THe era of listening to FM radio at home or in your car is rapidly giving away to listening to hundreds of channels on satellite radio. Maybe his death marks the end of an era?

Freeform is dead. It's all about nichés now.

I feel I really did give his life meaning. This is likely the end of an era and he was an instrumental part of that era. Looking ahead pragmatically only serves to undercore just how special he was. I wish I could have met him. I liked his show for the short time I heard it. I remember the first time I heard Roni Size's Reprazent it was on his show.

I don't mean to take anything away from the man. He was awesome.

John Peel wasn't a political animal.
Apart from his family, the only thing that mattered was music.

Is anybody listening to the show right now?
All Peel Session tunes for the next two hours.
Some classic stuff so far.

Just goes to show.
So many sessions, so much top tunage. :D 8)

Is what I was politely trying to say.

You listening John?

Got it on full blast here!
Only bad thing is, it's the wrong voice and lacks the insight and wit.
Music's top notch though. :D

f**k, first Greg Shaw, and now this.
I'm gonna go stick on the '88 Carcass Peel Sessions in his honour. Rest is peace, you crazy, brave, pioneering man.

he definitely was in his own way... many little rants against the tories, big party politics etc. Ever listen at the time of the miners strike?

and i remember him mentioning regretting never getting around to joining the communist party (back in the 80s obviously :))

yeah

"Love Will Tear Us Apart" is playing now.

I grew up in Manchester and Rochdale in the 70's (I know, I know... ) but I remember seeing the video (such as it was) on Granada Reports or something when I was about 7, and at the time, I thought it was the best thing I'd ever heard. I was more or less brought up by my gran - even she liked it!

I just can't believe he's not around anymore. How crap.

I knew he had no love for Thatcher but then again most of the people I know didn't. But wow, I never knew that. I like him even more now.

Right now several lightyears away John Peel is still playing the set of his life broadcasting to the heavens. That should give us all some comfort.

Actually, yeah, now you come to mention it.
I always saw it as common sense opinions though.

yeah, I know what you mean, but that was part of him, rather than him being part of it. He was a very well-rounded chap!

f**k. I used to go out of my way to catch him (specifically him, music or otherwise) on radio or TV. Miss him.
