I came across this in the dev forum, which reminded me at a computer music conference some decades ago.
This is the paper about Vosim:

It was tricky, because in the Grid there are some converters missing, namely pitch-to-frequency and alike. But I could hack a nice Vosim oscillator together. Its left raw without filters, but has some MPE modulations in it.

That oscillator has formants. The performance controls will determine the number of waves per cycle and the formant frequency/pitch. Also a decay for the waves is there...

This seems very interesting, I'll check this when I have a bit of time to sit down at the computer! There's a ton of stuff being released on the journals, and usually it's a slow and long road before the new inventions are packaged as VST by anybody, or maybe the things are a bit raw and uninteresting to a wider public, so no finished products ever come.

It is hardly a new invention. The paper is from 1978! The only instrument I am aware of that uses this technique sort of, is the Casio CZ series and its emulations in their formant oscillators without mentioning it. In the seventies it was much simpler to implement analog formant filters. The DIY Formant synthesizer from Elektor magazine was even named after those. (Döpfer started out with offering Formant kits btw...) Lovely patch! A while ago I tried to copy all the oscillator types from Unfiltered's LION in the Grid and tried their version of a VOSIM, but it's architecturally very different to this one.
Your version is capable of some lovely oldschool acid lines, dare I say a bit SH-101y at times. Chuck an SVF on the end, get some random/steps mod on a couple of the parameters, boom, it's the 90s again.

I don't know how the Vosim oscillators sound and admit that I didn't read the paper. Just remembered that the Massive X introduced some oscillator modes called ART (artificial resonance technology) which also offer some kind of formant/similar-to-hardsync-but-not-hardsync effect for oscillators.
Maybe it's something similar?

The Lion oscillator called VOSIM actually is just a VOSIM like waveform which does not keep the formant for different pitches. You can verify this with the oscilloscope in Lion. A real VOSIM oscillator is changing just the pause between the waves part, which determines the fundamental frequency...

Hmm incidentally I had a newly built modifued 5U Elektor Formant modular that I sold, but it had only Moog and Arp 4572 (?? IIRC) filters.
And that's what I mean! There's a lot of ideas that don't manage to escape the academic circles. Send your build to BW, maybe they can turn it into a native Grid module

But yes, their version definitely "VOSIM-like" instead of a true implementation of the concept.

Rob Hordijk had some VOSIM patches for the Nord Modular iirc..
