MSF vs MXXX

I'm trying to get my head around the differences (ignoring the price completely).

If you were to recommend just one of them, which would it be and why ?

What are the pros and cons of one over the other - what is gained/lost from each (again, ignoring the price) ?

Thanks.

It depends on what you want to do. If you want to process sound from other sources, get MXXX. If you want to create sound, get MSF.

While MSF contains most of the available plugins/modules, you can't route sound from other sources into it.

So MXXX can't create sound and MSF can't input sound ? That's the only real difference ?

It sounds like MSF is what I am looking for, but wondering therefore if the only thing 'missing' is the ability to process realtime audio from external sources ? All other modules etc. equivalent ?

Thanks.

MSoundFactory is basically a modular synth/sampler with a modular FX section. You can even load MXXX within MSF.

Edit:
From the sales page
Nearly all state of the art MeldaProduction effects are available in there, from reverbs to delays, filters, equalizer, compressors, distortions and much more.
"Nearly all" implies that some are missing, but I don't know which specifically.

Get MXXX. It includes MSF.

Can MSF inside MXXX be played from MIDI in ? Does MXXX give me anything over MSF other than audio in ?

Currently MXXX is on 50% sale which is a damn good deal, you'll get all of the Melda plugins.

With MXXX, you can absolutely generate sound, because you can use MSoundfactory, Powersynth and oscillators as generative sources and route them through FX.

The focus on MSF is to serve as a sound generation platform that covers all kinds of synthesis methods, but in general, you can use MXXX in the same way.

I think the main difference is the modulation system. MSF has got it's own modulation system that's different from MXXX and other Melda plugins. It's faster and more complex. however I still use the modulation system from MXXX to modulate Soundfactory (that is open in MXXX and thus modulatable)

I didn't know that. (Because I don't have it :( )

MXXX contains MSF within it as a module.

MSF contains MXXX within it as a module.

MSF has only MIDI input. So it's only a synth/sampler with loads of effects.

MXXX has both MIDI and audio input thus allowing it to be a synth, sampler, effects bus, audio processor, etc...

In essence, MXXX is an all in one sound generation/processing/effects package, whereas MSF is just generation. MSF can use MXXX but only on sound generated by MSF.

Hope this makes sense of the two.

I can't think of any money-is-no-object analysis in which MXXX isn't the more desirable, more powerful, more complete option.

But when $$$ comes to shove, remember that MSF can load and playback VERY long samples.

And don't forget that you can subscribe to the entire range of Melda devices for 3 months for free right now…

Just read dakkra's post, all you need to know is in that post. If you want my opinion just grab MXXX since its 50% off at the moment, that way you get every Melda FX and Instrument in one plugin. Also, if you are a new user add this coupon code:

Code: Select all

MELDA8381228
to get an extra 20% off of your total price.

I'm not someone who uses MIDI with external instruments; someone else might give some advice on that. But MXXX got KVR's MPE award, and it looks to me like everything in MXXX is MIDI accessible, in and out. Like David suggested, you should take advantage of the three-month trial period and try both products. If you feel time pressure from the current 50%-off sale, keep in mind that this sale gets repeated several times a year.

Yeah, I see it's not mentioned in marketing materials for MXXX, but MSF is in there along with MPowerSynth and MDrummer, and I can't see anything else that's missing. I think Vojtech is a genius at programming, but sometimes his programming gets way ahead of his marketing materials. He is very generous with what he offers.

Thank you everyone for the responses. That's been what I was looking for. I appreciate the hard work Vojtech does (I've conversed with him in the past) but as has been mentioned, the website isn't necessarily crystal clear in exactly what the differences are - an 'at a glance' comparison of the power tools would certainly help.

Anyway, I shall go and look deeper into MXXX now as that seems the better choice.
