Building a Drum Machine in MSF? (Without Samples)

I would like to build an instrument in MSF where different drum sounds are triggered by different midi notes.

I tried using the Drum Synthesizer module, for example, but I can't figure out how to trigger it only on specific notes. Is there a way to do it?

Can I maybe route specific midi notes to one of those 6 lanes(don't know what they are called)? That would give me at least 6 different drums to work with.

I would really appreciate ideas and suggestions on how to do this.

You mean, like in a sampler? MSF's got one of those:)

If you're determined to do it without simply placing single sounds on single keys in a sampler module, you could explore restricting the note range for each of 6 modules in a gen grid to a single MIDI note, or even loading a Modular module in each slot, each of which would have its own 6 slots…etc.

Right-click on a module to get this pop-up… See Note Min/Note Max:

Thanks. That really helps. I didn't know about the midi filter. And putting a modular module in each slot is a great idea if I want to have more than 6 sounds. Awesome!

I want to create my own sounds using physical modeling and maybe coming up with some other creative ideas. Hence the title.

At some point it might be worth the effort to render them into samples to safe CPU power, but at the moment, I want to keep my options open.

Thanks again. :)

Jeez, sorry; I didn't even notice the parenthetical part of the title! Was that always there?

Anyway, your plan sounds right up my alley, too:) Perhaps you'd enjoy this device (previously posted in this thread, which I highly recommend reading through, even if it doesn't seem immediately pertinent!) ?
Here's a mashup of Jason's Sample Selector and a physical-modeling gen grid inspired by one of Chandler's videos, in which the sampler is creating the impulses to drive the modal filter…and the sampler has Jason's samples (ref'ed, anyway) and his selector available for dramatically changing the timbre of the output by switching up the samples, all ready and waiting for the Factory Sample collection to be released [it's here now: https://www.meldaproduction.com/MSoundF ... stallation], or for swapping in any set of 128 samples that don't care what names they get given:) There's also a Modal-filter randomizer on the Easy Screen page I picked up somewhere along the way, with some envelop adjusters… Thanks, Jason, and Falky for starting this great thread!

I can easily imagine 6, or 6x6, of these set up each on its own grid column/key, ready for easy tweaking into lots of different physically modeled "kits"—even if the models are based on sampled impulses (my preferred way to do modeling, btw, esp. in MSF).

No problem. Maybe I shouldn't have hidden it inside parenthesis. But you gave me the answer I need anyway, so it's all good. :)

I've already looked at the thread you linked, but I'm not a big fan of using samples, especially in MSF since it's rather tedious. I just can't figure out how to set it up. I've imported the MDrummer essentials before, but they are in a different directory than the MSF Essentials, and I have no idea how to change the path.

Also, I've set the path for samples in the MSF settings, but whenever I want to select a sample in the sampler module, it opens the root directory and I have to navigate there. Edit: Seems to work now.

I also can't find a way to preview a sample in MSF (Sampler, Drum Sampler) without selecting it and playing a midi note.

So far, I've gotten great results with the Drum Synthesizer so I'll keep using that until using samples becomes more streamlined (or maybe it already is and someone just needs to explain it to me).

Thanks again for your help and if I manage to create something decent, I'll be sure to share it here :)

I look forward to it:)

If you like you can use the following patch for a start.
It's a basedrum, a snare, a second kind of snare and a hihat spread over the midi keys.
It kind of grew with the song it is used in, so don't expect something terrible awesome.
Use it as a start.

The Song is btw this here: https://soundcloud.com/p-e-t-e-r-h/oscs ... ctic-birds

I listened to the track on the other thread and liked it, and now I have the drum kit. Yay

That's gonna be a great starting point. Thank you!
