At least vinyl records didn't stop functioning just because they had a finger print on them. It was nice to have 12 inches of product whose sleeve stood the test of time instead of breaking after the first couple of opens like CDs (I can see somebody quoting me out of context
) CDs were a real let down even though they sound better. They look small, cheap and tacky. Oh and when you got a gatefold sleeve with your vinyl like Jeff Wayne's War Of The Worlds...!!!

I still love that I can make a song, burn a CDR then play it on my old hifi or in the car.
I buy audio CDs regularly too ... as well as flac, wav, mp3 downloads. I've also put a lot of my vinyl (and some cassettes) onto CDRs so I can listen to them without playing the record or tape itself.

For convenience and technical reasons. I have all my CDs converted to MP3 on my HD and I can find any song in just a few seconds.
And the technical reason is there's not a damn working CD player in my house.

Still buy CDs, still own CDs. The idea of not owning a hard copy of the music I buy is, imo, silly. Still, what I listen to is ripped into my computer, and listened to through my interface and monitors, which are very good, but not exactly the full listening experience. We need a new stereo system, we were discussing it, then the world went down the shitter.

Still have a bit of physical media around but Spotify family is so cheap that it's like an incidental expense that happens to give us access to shedloads of the music we wanna listen to. I'd pay more so that the artists could get more. Streaming at the highest quality or via Spotify Connect in my Onkyo sounds OK to my ears. As do 320s.
It still allows me to spend on physical media if I want to and I get occasional blu rays for the family to watch of cool films, but for music, not happened recently.

I don't think the morons ever proof read the CD covers. Pity. Still, I'll stick with CDs. Quite often, the older the better as the morons who ''remaster'' great music invariably destroy everything the get their hand on. They have no respect.
This is the same method MJ used when he was working on Anthony Marinelli's Thriller.

I can't say I agree. I can't think of a single remastered CD I don't prefer to the original. Technology has come a long way and all to the better.
The bottom line is that my 35 year old CDs are in infinitely better condition than my 35 year old vinyl is, even though my vinyl has all been in zip-lock bags the whole time.
Why? They don't sound as good, they are much easier to lose and they require a lot more organisation. I still have the first CD I ever bought, way back in 1985, but I wouldn't have a clue if I still have the first mp3 I ever bought. It's just not important. CDs replaced vinyl, mp3s are more of a replacement for cassettes.chk071 wrote: Thu Apr 23, 2020 8:31 pmMP3 all the way. So glad that the time of physical media is over.
Mine don't take up any space at all, unlike mp3s, which take up way too much space on my SSD.chk071 wrote: Thu Apr 23, 2020 8:42 pmI really hated how much space they take, if I think about it now.
Of course they do. The difference is that you can't just rub it on your shirt to fix it.Erisian wrote: Thu Apr 23, 2020 9:24 pmAt least vinyl records didn't stop functioning just because they had a finger print on them.
Unless you got it wet. Then, of course, was the problem that they could just fall out of their sleeves onto the floor. In 45 years I've never had a CD do that.It was nice to have 12 inches of product whose sleeve stood the test of time instead of breaking after the first couple of opens like CDs
No, they look sleek, compact and shiny, even after a decade of regular use. That's not something you could say about the cheap paper sleeves vinyl came in.CDs were a real let down even though they sound better. They look small, cheap and tacky.
All completely reproducible on CD, especially a beautiful gatefold digipak. My two favourites are Test Dept's The Unacceptable Face of Freedom - the vinyl sleeve folded out into the shape of a religious cross, which was faithfully reproduced on the CD booklet. The other is Frank Tovey's Snakes and Ladders, where the CD booklet unfolded in a random way, kind of like the gameboard. (There was nothing like that with the vinyl.)Oh and when you got a gatefold sleeve with your vinyl like Jeff Wayne's War Of The Worlds...!!!

Why can't you do that with an mp3?thecontrolcentre wrote: Thu Apr 23, 2020 11:13 pmI still love that I can make a song, burn a CDR then play it on my old hifi or in the car.
Why is that harder with your CDs? It certainly isn't the case with my collection.dark_virus wrote: Fri Apr 24, 2020 3:39 am I have all my CDs converted to MP3 on my HD and I can find any song in just a few seconds.
