Rewire/Reason Glitches

I've downloaded the Tracktion demo, and I love the interface and sound quality. I will buy it right away if I can resolve an issue.

I'm rewiring 12 tracks in from Reason. Three of them have Tracktion reverbs on them. I get serious cracks, pops and glitches later in the song. If I disable the reverbs, it gets better.

This is a 800mHz/384MB win2k machine. I bumped the cache up to 150MB, but still get problems.

Is the computer simply underpowered? Are there other tweaks I can make?

Try using Senderella to use the Reverb as a send. That way you can load only 1 reverb and send it to as many tracks as you would like.

As a matter of interest, do you prefer Tracktion's reverb to RV7000

I must admit I would use RV7000 myself (I do just that, in fact :) )

However, in addition to AD80's advice (Senderella is a plug-in, in case you're wondering, but not sure where you get it...) :

Try:

1) Using a different reverb to see if the same happens (e.g. the free Kjaerhus Classic Reverb, which is nice)

2) Opening a "Rack FIlter" and sending your three reverb tracks through it (i.e. like a conventional send effect)

3) Freezing the tracks that use the reverb.

Hope at least one of these ideas helps 8)

Good advice. I've never used the Tracktion reverb in my life. Theres too many good freebies out there. Plus I own MasterVerb.

actually, more my point, rather than trying to get reverbs working on a specific song, was to figure out why I'm getting such bad playback using only 12 tracks rewired from Reason, a few plugs in Tracktion, and no additional audio or midi in Tracktion. There's plenty of unfragmented room on the disk, and the cpu meter never peaked, but still glitches and cracks on playback.

I want to buy and start using Tracktion, but if the useable track count is going to be very low compared to another rewire audio/midi sequencer, then it's not going to work for me.

I'd like to be able to use, say 12 or 16 tracks from Reason, a few aditional midi tracks in Tracktion, and four or six audio tracks. Also I'd like to be able to do a straight 24 track audio-only mix with a reasonable amount of realtime effects going, though I don't mind freezing.

Is this too much to ask of Tracktion running on a 800MHz/384MB Win2K stock Compaq Deskpro?

No, it shouldn't be a problem...

I use Tracktion, Live and Adobe Audition as ReWire hosts, and I find Tracktion the leanest in terms of using multiple tracks, specifically because of the three it is the one with a Freeze function. This instandtly frees up CPU for other tasks, and I strongly suggest you try it if you haven't yet.

sorry for the dumb newbie question then... as I don't have my tracktion demo in front of me, does the freeze function render a rewired track to an audio file? I was under the impression that freeze only printed an audio track and its effects to a tmp file.

Well, it won't freeze Reason itself... it will sort out your Audio and MIDI tracks though, including the effects and VST instruments. So you really shouldn't have problems adding in several audio and MIDI tracks along with your Reason. And if you route the 3 Reason tracks to a single reverb as as Rack Filter, then this shouldn't add significantly to the load either.

The only other thing I can think of is to question the number of Reason effects you have running, but you already stated you're not using RV7000, which is the most processor-heavy.

So beyond that I'm not sure :?

well hey, thanks for the replies and advice. I'm just going to buy the thing and dive in. I love the interface, and crackles aside, it sounds great.

another thing you might want to check out/tell us about with a machine of that particular vintage is your video card. Certain video cards seem to really f**k with T's performance.

If I were you I would try to get the demo working right before you buy. Theres not much difference between the demo and the real version. So make sure its gonna work for you before you buy. Theres no rush, you can save and open projects with the Demo too. Make sure it works with your system thats why they have demos. :)

It could definitely be a buffer size/Latency/CPU Power thing tho. Try different latencies and buffer sizes on your card. 800mhz isnt a lot of power nowadays so you have to be extra careful.
