I understand Satin is capable of emulating the Dolby A system, but would really appreciate further details on the best usage when supplied with tape>digital transfers that have options of
A - Dolby-A encoded
B -Dolby-A decoded
What would be the best version to use as far as accuracy & being faithful to the original recordings on the multitracks please? Currently I tend to use the version that sounds the best to my ears and not worry about the Dolby stuff, but I am far from sure this is the technically accurate way to work.
That said, all the remixes I have currently done have been very well received so perhaps I should not worry but I still have this little nagger in the back of my skull that is telling me I really should get to grips with the subtle details & usage - as far as that is possible given that no 2 Dolby A units ever sounded quite the same, making it very difficult to exactly replicate what was heard in the original mix sessions

Not sure if I fully understand it, but my guess would be to simply try it out: if a tape is A-coded, decode it with the plugin's A-type decoder. If there's a decoded version, compare and decide what sounds more 'intact' and with the least artifacts.

We've tried emulating the A-type process based on two 361 units we had under test, but it's almost impossible to capture every processing nuance, given its complexity, number of (undocumented) parameters and their interaction. We're certain decoding with the plugin gets you somewhere in the ballpark, but we can't garantee it's spot-on.

Thanks again, Sascha.
What you say is already what I am doing but I do appreciate the clarification of what I thought I knew.
