Hi,

i'd really like to build hardware controllers with lots of knobs and switches for some plugins like Repro, but got stuck in the design/build process after learning some parameters can't be MIDI controlled or host automated (mod matrix or fx bypass for example).

I stopped it because i thought i'd end up with something half baked or incomplete.

I'm looking for ideas to solve the problem of the missing parameters. Has anyone had success building their own controller?

Thanks

Was this some question raised in the Custom Controllers for Diva thread?

Thinking about your problem, my mind goes to the old saying, "don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good?" It means perfection may not be achievable, but absent perfection, do the best you can with what you can. Some synths may allow for MIDI mapping of every parameter, but the rest of the time, if you can get 85-90% of sound generating parameters mapped, I'd consider that a win. If you can map everything except the mod matrix, fx bypass (that one is a pet peeve for me too), and sequencer (RePro1), then just put those in the "out of scope" bucket and make the other parts work. You'd still have a wildly capable controller and could stay off the mouse for the vast majority of tasks.

Thanks for your encouraging words.

Do you mean my own DIVA controller thread? Mapping DIVA should be the lesser problem (iirc) but is more complex on the whole due to its flexible nature. To gain some more experience i wanted to build a medium sized controller first. I thought Repro-5 could be a fitting candidate.

It looks like i should work on downgrading my expectations for perfection first ;)

I really think you'll find if you can get the vast majority of the sound producing elements mapped well, it will be a worthwhile endeavor. Remember: RePro-1 with no FX or Sequencer was a Pro-One, and Repro-5 the Prophet-5. In RePro, I think you've got every feature you'd need to create a MIDI controller that covers those mapping all the synthesizer features of those synths (with some additions like velocity sensitivity) and FX (just not the global FX bypass button).

If you do start a build. Post the progress. I know nothing about how that type of thing can be done, but it'd be cool to watch it happen.
