Not too many Reaper fans :o

Recently made the mistake of subbing to protools - an excellent if not purposefully crippled daw - terrible company.

Inspired me to take a look at reaper again and try and see what processes I could automate and speed up / using the best aspects of ableton, s1, protools etc as foundation - it's an amazing daw - and as the cliche goes - if you know what you want to get out of it and are willing to put the time in with actions - nothing beats it.

That’s not a poll for which Daw you use.

But a strong indicator given the missionary zeal of the Reaper evangelists.

I've seen more people decrying REAPER users zeal than actual zealots. I'm not defending it, just stating that in most user polls it ends up between the 3 top most used ones.

So, for what its worth, I started re-focusing on music a few months and initially gravitated towards Reaper for its price, customizability and general Linux-like ethos. But because of the UI I just keep moving away from it and find myself using other alternatives. I've given it about 2 months and I think it just does not feel quite polished enough for me to want to keep using it as my primary DAW. Which is a shame, because otherwise I think it's great -- and I am kind of annoyed with myself for being so shallow that I let looks push me away.

I became too dependent on Retrospective MIDI Record, so much so it's part of my workflow now. I wouldn't even say that Cubase was the most visually appealing any more. But it has so many nice things that I generally overlook the horrors of the dongle. I think I first put in an FR on the Cockos forum for Retrospective MIDI Record back in 2009? 11 years is a long time in music making. Steinberg have absorbed me into the collective. There is no return. :borg:

Well, you just did. Not sure that tone or line of attack helps make the case that reaper users aren’t missionary zealots, but what do I know really

So of the two possibilities: a) there aren't many reaper fans active on KVR or b) they aren't the zealots you believe them to be, you're going with a)?

Confirmation bias, anyone?

It's actually c)
Reaper users are a small minority of zealots.
However: have you tried Reaper?

I always hear people raving about the piano roll in FL Studio but I have never tried it. What exactly makes it so good?

It's usually the people that don't know Reaper well enough that keep putting it off as a toy and, like yourself, aggressively campaigning against it, using name calling, ad hominems, misinterpretations, and all sorts of other unconstructive but oh so passionate attempts at discrediting anyone using this evil piece of software. Which, in return, causes Reaper users to speak up and defend their choice, often quite aggressively. Which, in return, plays right into your hands, doesn't it.
Confucamus.

yeah I see a lot more "lol REAPER users be like 'have you tried REAPER' am I rite??" than I see actual REAPER zealotry

it's the classic internet-backlash-to-the-annoying-thing being more annoying than what they're reacting to
