I was also a little disappointed by this.Teksonik wrote: Sat May 09, 2020 4:18 am I'm also embarrassed and ashamed at the number of people who have admitted to using cracked software (I never have nor never will).
Another interpretation would be that the protection doesn't work. You'd need a set of more specific questions to unpick it all.It kind of makes the whole "we don't need no copy protection" argument hard to justify.![]()
It is especially interesting to look at that number vs the demographics. I hope the survey data allows for analysis of correlations between some of these answers.

i saw that it was a survey and thought "i cant be arsed"xtp wrote: Fri May 08, 2020 11:08 pm I didn't do it because for about 80% of the questions, my answer was not on the list; so in view of that, I thought it pointless to participate.

When I first got a computer many years ago, I was given copies of some cracked software because I had nothing at all. It was always my intention that this would be temporary and that I would save and start buying stuff. As it happens, I started buying Computer Music magazine and was thus introduced to the world of Freeware. I immediately removed all the cracked stuff. Either way, the developers have no money from me so it makes no practical difference. The existence of quality free plugins is far more of a threat to commercial developers than cracking ever was, and that is virtually no threat at all. I've a feeling that the only developers that might make money from me are U-he, because I would like Repro-1 and possibly Repro-5 and freeware developers whose plugins are particularly useful to me that I might want to donate something to. Anyway, I am now totally legal and will always stay that way. This isn't an excuse, it's just the way it happened.Teksonik wrote: Sat May 09, 2020 4:18 am I'm also embarrassed and ashamed at the number of people who have admitted to using cracked software (I never have nor never will).

I hate surveys, which have ”either-or” vs. ”both-and” options.
Plus surveys, like this one, which forces to answer every question without the alternative ”DK/Its not your business”, i.e. the respondent has either to answer every question, or become disqualified of the whole survey.
You will miss huge amount of data, because of the ”coitus interreptus” -syndrome.
Most unprofessional.

That was my whole point. With such a large percentage of people admitting to being pirates the argument that Devs don't need copy protection is hard to support.revvy wrote: Sat May 09, 2020 5:49 amI think devs need copy protection.Teksonik wrote: Sat May 09, 2020 4:18 am "None of these" DAWs is winning by a substantial amount over the top two so obviously the Poll is incomplete. I'm also embarrassed and ashamed at the number of people who have admitted to using cracked software (I never have nor never will).

No contradiction there for me.
Of course Devs need copy protection. The Poll results do nothing but confirm that fact.

You missed the first bit of my reply which gave the context for the second part.Teksonik wrote: Sat May 09, 2020 4:28 pmThat was my whole point. Anyway, we both agree devs are justified in protecting their product and neither of us do snide stuff. That's fine.

I didn't miss it I just couldn't make sense of it.....

Can anyone actually get to the Poll results now ? I was able to view them earlier but can't seem to do so now. Maybe I'm just missing it......
Saw this in another thread:
To me it could read that it's "ok if someone was a Pirate in the past as long as they aren't one now". But perhaps that's not what you meant...revvy wrote: Sat May 09, 2020 5:49 am I'm a believer in 'it ain't where you're from it's where you're at'.

Perhaps the result are hidden because of those results. Last time I looked it was like 40 something percent admitted to having pirated and quite a few percent voted "would rather not say" or whatever the response was which AnX pointed out is possibly an admission of guilt.robotmonkey wrote: Sat May 09, 2020 12:58 pm EDIT: Seems that the result have disappeared for some reason. Maybe so many people admitted using pirated software that Hink was triggered again.

My short answer is instead of being ashamed of folks misbehaving badly in the past, accept their money spent and honesty now. They are not bad people and they are not unlikely to support protection now. You're not their dad.

Apparently no one else was either.....someone should have taught them morality.
Yes I'm ashamed that such a large percentage of people on a forum I've frequented for nearly two decades have admitted to being thieves at some point in their lives.
I prefer to keep better company......
And like I said on a forum where perhaps as many as 50% have admitted to being pirates it's going to be hard to justify arguing against any form of Copy Protection.
