*The first song that they use doesn't seem like the best choice to illustrate what it does: You can't
really tell what MAutovolume is doing...at least I can't. But still, the video is pretty good overall.

Problem is I'd rather read a description of how it's used than watch videos which are harder to glean information from but the website description is very minimal.

Just the ability to cut off volume when peaks are detected (it's a useful safety feature)

Ah ha - you meant to type "automute". MAutoVolume is not designed for that.
Other MeldaProduction plug-ins have a Limiter in the toolbar:
MAutoVolume is a solution to a common problem - stabilizing loudness of a front instrument, such as a vocal, a bass or a saxophone. Although you can use a compressor for this, setting it up may be very time consuming and the results questionable. You can also manually automate the volume fader, which is the method most engineers used so far, and it is not exactly ideal as well. MAutoVolume solves this problem quickly, easily and with astonishing results.
In most cases all you need to do is to put MAutoVolume as an insert onto the particular track, preferably as the last item in the chain. Then you can use Output gain to adjust the desired output level, or you can use the mixer fader in your host, the functionality would be the same.
Other MeldaProduction plug-ins have a Limiter in the toolbar:
Limiter button enables or disables the safety limiter. Its purpose is to protect you from peaks above 0dB, which can have damaging effects to your processing chain, your monitors and even your hearing.
It is generally advised to keep your audio below 0dB at all times in all stages of your processing chain. However, several plugins may cause high level outputs with certain settings, often due to unprevented resonances with specific audio materials. The safety limiter prevents that.
Note that it is NOT wise to enable this "just in case". As with any processing, the limiter requires additional processing power and modifies the output signal. It is a transparent single-band brickwall limiter, but you still need to be careful when using it.

Yeah don't want to use a limiter for this job - limiters change the sound if not careful

I've used Ice9 for years as the last plug on the 2bus set to 0:00 dBFS. When the threshold is hit the audio is silenced without a click, and releases when the audio goes back down. It's instantaneous in/out, silence. I don't see it as either a limiter nor a compressor, just a brickwall save me from auditory death tool.
You know the routine. You meant to enter -30 but absent mindedly enter 30 instead...speaker and hearing gone for the afternoon...(sigh)...there are lots of versions of this. I mentioned this here several times, and to V! as well in a PM. I would love to have this as an option in MLA...(where I made the above mentioned absent minded error several times)...The installer is floating around the forums somewhere...hth.../s~

I just use a custom shape in MDynamics for this. I'll share the preset I use at the end of my chain which is set to mute any volume spikes that reach 0dBFS. It's saved my ears any number of times.

Why not use a compressor with a look-ahead? Use the highest reduction ratio possible, a fast attack, and a fast release, with a threshold some small amount below 0db.
I don't get the difference between a compressor set up this way, and some specialized product
for your purposes. But perhaps I'm missing something.

Come to think of it, I think you can use MCompressor for this (which is in the free bundle).
This compressor allows you to draw in your compression curve! ANY curve you like, with as
many nodes as you want. Quite astonishing that it's free!
Anyway, in the picture, notice that "Custom Shape" is on. *This disables the parameters that
I have X-ed out in red, because in custom shape mode, the curve you pick dictates those.
Here I created a node just below 0db for the input. Then at the bottom right is another node,
circled in yellow. That node is determining the reduction, which can be as extreme ( or not)
as you want. You can also fiddle with the attack and release times to get the behavior that
you want. I really think that this should work fine...just play with the curve shape, and the settings a bit.

No. The preset actually mutes the sound. I think you can probably do it with any Melda compressor as long as you have the option to create a custom transfer function. Just leave the audio untouched until it gets close to 0dBFS and then have the transfer curve rapidly drop to silence. I think mine kicks in at around -0.2dBFS. With no look-ahead you'll still get a click but with a bit of look-ahead (mine uses 3ms) it should mute to silence flawlessly.
Your suggestion of just using a limiter would certainly be better than nothing but you still might get some pretty sudden, unpleasant sounds blasting through at 0dBFS. Also I like to have it audibly mute so that I know when I've had an overshoot.
