jonljacobi wrote: Tue May 12, 2020 6:48 pm I think the flat minimalism in design is just a reflection of what's happened with physical design. I chalk it up to seeking calm in an ever noisier, both audibly and visually, world. I think it's gone too far, as you don't have to worship skeuomorphism to acknowledge that we see and interpret 3D, and if used wisely, it will speed recognition and cognition.
Agree. Exactly why street signs will never be 3D models - they are there to serve a purpose. I believe the flat look is not a design choice because some people think it looks cool. Instead, it enables scaling/resizing to occur much easier due to being vector-based. They are accommodating our desire for control and various screen resolutions.
A stop sign is not 3D itself, but it exists in a 3D environment. But yes, rendered objects and simple bitmaps are far easier to scale. And I very much like scaling at my age. ;-) LOL. I wish Logic did, but the Mac does it very well, so no biggie.

I really don't have the problem with flat a lot of people do, as long as it's done well and the designers follow the rules for contrast, alignment, delineation, consistency, etc.
There is a difference between being flat and being ugly. The new icons are not pretty. I've see some really nice flat designs but the new icons are not doing it for me. They are a little garish, that's mostly down to the colors which really make them even uglier.

Just reading down the list i can recall,
Since Apple Released 10. 200$, Logic has:
Acquired and Integrated the Alchemy Synth: that cost more $ Then LOGIC Itself then ADDED Stuff to The Already Fantastic Synth.
Completely Rehauled the UI and Updated Every Single Significant Plugin to match Modern Retina Displays.
Added an insane amount of Content. GB and GBs of New Drummers Loops and Presets.
Built 3 New Vintage EQs.
Built in A Bunch of Special Sample based instruments for Horns and Strings And the Mellotron.
Rewrote Automation to include Trim and Auto Read itself like Live.
Added 2 Multi Effects Units.
Created the Smart Tempo System.
Added in A Live Looping Feature.
Rewrote the Sampler entirely and Meticulously re mapped all the EXS Samples so that they can still work.
Added in a New Quick Sampler.
Made countless small feature changes in plugins (Import Wavetables into Retro Synth, More Filters for plugins)
Created the Cromatic Verb Reverb Plugin.

Im missing a-lot of stuff I know it I just can't even remember it all. These are all added in Point updates since the 200$ Release of Logic X.

Many vendors have scaling/resizing, even vector based, without having to be minimalistic flat. That's a poor and lazy excuse.
I agree, however, the more complicated the elements, the more difficult it is, the slower it is, and the more CPU it uses. I'm not a real fan of skeuomorphism unless it's recreating original hardware, and even then I can live without it if it sounds good.

I don't find Logic's interface particularly appealing, even with Matthew's themes, however, it is decently efficient.

It's really too bad the new Step Sequencer doesn't allow step-recording into it, the way the one in Studio One 4 does. That feature really puts steps sequencers over the top, it's such a fun way to work (inputing notes from the keyboard but with nothing playing, with an optional 'rest' button, and everything just gets tied to the-step grid; same thing as the Repro-1 and Bassline-101 sequencers, actually). This logic Step Sequencer is otherwise very similar to Studio One's implementation, but that's definitely a big missing feature afaic.

The new DMD is awesome. I don't remember if that was there before but now you can slice convert to DMD as well. When you drop a sample you get a mini Quick Sampler, or if you add a Drum synth the synth view. Nice!
yeah... so far, workflow seems excellent! And I am always happy when I try something for the first time and can make it work without any manual or such.

Can the Live Loop cells be triggered individually via MIDI?

This right here kills a lot of work around a for me!

Playing with it, this is a nice update indeed. ESX24, excuse me, Sampler is much, much easier. They've been busy.

Do you think it's pure generosity coming from deep love they have for you ? ...or they just calculated they will get more of your money by hooking you to their hardware with their software ? :hihi:

Money that Apple would make from paid upgrades would probably be insignificant for them...

Impressive. I was wrong about this being a paid update, but I don't think I'm its target demographic. The old and braindead.

That's no secret. That's why Apple bought Emagic and FCP in the first place to have pro level software on their platforms which they control and that use their technologies so they can sell more hardware. Apple may not love us but unless everyone buys a new Mac every year, it sure feels nice to have a DAW that get updated on regular basis and all I paid for it was $199 all the way back in 2013.

I've always seen it more as a way to get people to upgrade to the latest OS. Which is why I'm surprised that they didn't force it this time.

cherry picking that quote out of context.
What I actually said was.

I fully am aware that logic is to help their Mac line. I use Mac anyways Logic or No Logic, so the hardware binding doesn’t really effect me. And I appreciate Regardless that they give away such stuff for free when they have no inclination too.
That’s why I said “with logic” and not their generosity period.

I know it’s the same company that asks for 1000$ for a Display stand and 699$ for Wheels, I’m not trying to make them out to be the patron saints of giving. Just specifically in the case of LOGIC they treat us well.

Apple does not do this out of the "goodness of their heart". They do it to sell computers. To ascribe benevolence to any large corporation is pure naivete. Apple in particular have been litigious beyond belief, pays a lower percentage of its income in taxes than you or I, and exploits cheap labor whenever possible.

That said, yes, there have been a ton of free updates to Logic. Cost-wise, you simply can't beat it.

My goal wasn't to hide the context...

But ironically, to talk about Apple's generosity we have to take that generosity out of context... but yeah you are right ...they could charge way more and that wouldn't be a surprise from them !
