Logic Pro 10.5 is out!

Great update. The Ableton-esque performance mode, the two new samplers, the step sequencer.... All great.

I was a little confused as to how to access the step sequencer. That's because I was in the Live Loops grid and apparently there's only quick access to the piano roll from that section??? Have to go to: Window>Open Step Sequencer, which then opens a separate window... And then you have to enter a note in order for it to show up in the main window in the "Editors" section...

Unless there's something I'm missing.

In the traditional tracks section, you're given the option to choose between: Piano Roll, Score, Step Sequencer, Smart Tempo.... Options which appear at the top of the editor section.

Those options disappear when the live loops is highlighted though.

Not sure why they did it that way, making you go through those extra steps to use the step sequencer in live loops, pun intended.

Otherwise, great update.

You can just right click on a cell and choose Create Pattern Cell. Step Sequences are different than regular midi sequences and they are treated differently in Logic. Similar to Studio One actually. You can convert Step Sequence Cell to a Midi Cell, but not the other way around as far as I can tell.

Right click! I knew I was making it more difficult than it needed to be.

Also, melodic step sequencing is great when combined with varying the speed of the rows.

Only thing I wish they'd do know is add the ability to record the output of MIDI FX to a MIDI file on the same track, though I realize you can use the MacOS IAC Driver as a workaround for that.

I’ve been using the freeware MIDI FX Freeze plugin for several years. I haven’t tested it on LPX.5 yet, but it’s worked well until now.

It's an amazing update, to the point I'm wondering if I should give up Ableton Live. Logic Pro X now seems like a more complete solution for a greater variety of music making tasks.

It’s definitely the more complete solution but for me at least I’m always gonna have room for live as the push 2 is around.
My favorite hardware item in my studio.
I’m interested to see if we’re going to see mapping abilities for well known controllers added to logic.


Or better yet what if Apple makes a hardware controller for logic.

It would Probally be unreasonably expensive per Apple but it would be really interesting to see played out in theory.

It’s a great device too. There’s just somthing about Physical knobs and Pads and keys when it comes to live. I don’t know how to explain it.

Are there any good LPX CPU benchmarking projects? I haven't noticed any significant differences in my own projects, but I'm usually only tickling the CPU most of the time as it is.

Meant mainly between different DAW's, guess thing is any one that can be repeated in other with same settings and all that, it would be interesting to know how Logic now performs in clip launching mode opposed to Bitwig/Live, did all that had impact on performance in arrangement mode and etc.

Many vendors have scaling/resizing, even vector based, without having to be minimalistic flat. That's a poor and lazy excuse.

I agree, however, the more complicated the elements, the more difficult it is, the slower it is, and the more CPU it uses. I'm not a real fan of skeuomorphism unless it's recreating original hardware, and even then I can live without it if it sounds good.

They don't use the CPU, they use the GPU, which is what it's there for. You have now incredibly powerful GPUs in your display cards, capable of incredibly fast 3D render, and you think they can't deal with some trivial tasks as render properly and fast enough some slightly 3D graphic elements?

No, this has to do with the stupid trend of making everything like the smartphone GUIs.

It’s a great device too. There’s just somthing about Physical knobs and Pads and keys when it comes to live. I don’t know how to explain it.

I also prefer physical controls... I explain it that physical controls allow me to develop muscle memory and I do not need to look at the device to use it. Having to look takes mental focus away from the task itself. A screen I have to look to make sure I am touching the right place on the screen and I have to keep looking to make sure the parameter is moving and I haven't accidentally lost the connection. I also generally need the visual reference to see how much I have moved the on-screen control.

That said, the iPad Pro gives me much better visual feedback than say Push. I can see a 10x14 Grid on my iPad Pro (Push is 8x8) and if the grid is bigger, I don't have to page up/down or left/right... just swipe around which is more fluid and intuitive.

The Mixer view is more immediately informative than on a Push and has different modes. There is a lot more visual info and a lot less button pushing.

The first time I launched Logic Remote I had no trouble understanding everything it could do within a few minutes of exploring. Push is a significant learning curve and easy to forget how to navigate somewhere when I haven't used it in a while.

All things considered, I prefer the iPad
