Sure. What about it?
I think we covered the big stuff already, but I've been using it for years and would be happy to get back on topic if there's something else to discuss that piques my interest.

I do. I have asked the two most high profiled SB VST3 developers and some other SB developers directly..Unless you are going to say they lied to me?Funkybot's Evil Twin wrote: Fri May 15, 2020 6:12 pmWe've been getting along just fine with VST2 without that stuff, or with workarounds in place for years. Wouldn't it have been easier to add that to VST2 than build a new format from the ground up? Neither of us know, but maybe.zvenx wrote: Fri May 15, 2020 5:55 pm The list I sent with vst3 improvents included other stuff than side chaining and processing cpu savings when there was no audio... Like for instance the dynamic i/o s in audio and the i/o improvement in midi?
Note: I never said "recoup." I never even meant to imply it. I don't think this is about money they're going to make, I think this is about money they spent, and them not wanting it to go to waste. If Steinberg spent millions of their own money developing and implementing VST3 with the intention of widespread adoption, and no one ultimately used it, that's the same as digging a whole in the yard, putting all your cash in it, and lighting it on fire. All that money gone for no reason. So even if they're not cashing back in on VST3, the money they spent in the past, could be dictating why they're pushing adoption. Hence the whole sunk cost fallacy thing.zvenx wrote: Fri May 15, 2020 5:55 pm But how are they recouping these sunk costs? There is afaik no license fee for use of vst3.
That's an assumption. VST3 will likely need updating for MIDI 2.0. It certainly predates MIDI 2.0 by several years. So if VST3 will need updates, then why couldn't VST2 have also been updated? We could both make the exact same assumption, or I could argue "an update is an update" so VST3 vs VST2, both would require changes so no benefit.zvenx wrote: Fri May 15, 2020 5:55 pm Also you may want to take a look at this.

Vst3 will allow the new features in Midi 2 I don't believe vst2 would.

You are aware Midi 2.0 has been in discussion for years and that SB updates their vst3 sdk right? I think one came out in last December.
I think the difference between us is I get access to both sides of the discussion/debate.
I beta test for a lot of the players on both sides of that debate. I can assure you SB have done lots of stuff I disagree with and have said so to them, directly.
Anyway I have hijacked this thread long enough.
There is a vst2 vst3 debate that started today on kvr .

Has the cpu usage improved over the years? Specially now with the Big change?Funkybot's Evil Twin wrote: Fri May 15, 2020 6:21 pmSure. What about it?

Mostly interested in Jupier 8 and XV 5080.

They added a "low CPU mode" at once point to (at least) the ACB synths, but I don't think anything else has been done recently. I certainly haven't noticed a difference in CPU usage recently with those. Was the XV-5080 high though? I know the ACB stuff was. You'd think a 90's/00's ROMpler would be super low CPU on today's machines.

So what's still on the Roland Cloud wishlist? For me it would be...
1. Jupiter-6 (8 voices please)
2. JX-8P/MKS-70
3. Alpha Juno/MKS-50
4. JD-800
5. Jupiter-4 (8 voices please)

I never tried the xv 5080 software. I just have often read ppl in general complain about cpu and the to tiny/blurry graphics.Funkybot's Evil Twin wrote: Fri May 15, 2020 7:46 pm They added a "low CPU mode" at once point to (at least) the ACB synths, but I don't think anything else has been done recently. The most recent XV5080 (and almost all their other plugs) now allow you to scale up. I like it at 200%.

I did some A/Bing between XV5080 & all SRX'es and Zenology. I found Zenology encompasses almost all the patches of the XV and SRX'es (I couldn't find 1:1 matches for the drum kits), except Zenology doesn't have reverb (so some patches sound different). Also, I heard some differences between the Dance SRX and the Zenology equivalent (SRX Dance Trax 001 Smash Beat vs EXZ012 001 Smash Beat - Zenology is missing the trance gate).
I'd assume this would only matter if someone was trying to 'port' their songs from XV+SRX to Zenology. If you start with Zenology in the first place, you wouldn't notice.

I may go this way..
I still have a working JV 2080 which I haven't used in real production for almost 15 years, and was going to get an XV5080 when I changed paths and went software (and cubase and PC), but always wanted an XV 5080 software version.. But it just needs to sound XV 5080 for me not Exactly XV 5080 as I am not using it to replace an XV 5080, so I may wait till the Zenology Pro comes out and just go that route.
thanks

I always wanted a D-50 but then again, there's probably only a few sounds out of it that I'd like. In fact, I think I'm covered with my Korg Collection as is. I had a Juno 106 back in the day and thought it was a bit crap really. Not sure I'd spend a large amount of money on a virtual version. Any of the playback stuff could be handled by Triton. I don't know ... I was excited until I saw the prices and the weirdness of their operation with this app thing. Zenology seems to have some nice sounds but I haven't really dug into it yet.
