Hi,
I've just downloaded Waveform 11 FREE edition two days ago.
Since that, I'm playing around with this app and I would like to know more about this app.
This is my process :
Create a new project with a name TEST IMPORT.
In the track panel, I drag test1.mid file to track-1.
Click the Projects tab, I see this :
Next, I save the TEST IMPORT then close the app.
I delete the test1.mid file in my computer drive then I open the TEST IMPORT.tracktion file.
In the Projects tab I see this :
I thought that with an information like the picture above,
Waveform is complaining about the missing file and track-1 will go "blank" (no midi clip from test1.mid file anymore), because this file is missing in the project. But it turned out track-1 still has the midi clip from test.1 mid file.
Anyway, I go back to the Projects tab and click the "Find Missing File" button, then it show this :
So I choose "Browse" and choose another different midi file, test2.mid file.
Thinking that in the TEST IMPORT tab - the midi clip in track-1 is now a midi clip from test2.mid file. But it turn out track-1 still contains a midi clip from test1.mid file.
My question:
How do I make Waveform change the midi clip in track-1 from test1.mid file to test2.mid file ?
I ask this because I thought that the "workflow" is similar like in video editor app, where If the imported file is missing then the app will complain and the clip in the timeline becomes "blank/offline". And when the (missing) imported file is changed/updated/relinked then that "blank" clip in the timeline is also changed/updated with the new clip.
Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advanced.
How do I make Waveform 11 FREE edition change the clip from imported file in a track if the imported file is change ?

Not sure about importing MIDI files, but audio files "import" will sometimes ask if you want to COPY the content, or just use the content in place - and you might not to have copies of files all over. In this case, if you DIDN'T actually import the file, you have a file reference to it only; so when the file is deleted the content is missing but still pointed to.
You can now simply delete the reference to that file, so it won't be referenced and won't be "missing".

Hi Peter,
This time I tried like this :
Create a new project (TEST WAV), drop TanahAirVocal1.wav file to track-1 and select NO, I don't want to copy the wav file to the project folder. Then I also drop TanahAirVocal1.mid file to track-2. It didn't ask me about to copy the file to the project folder.
So I save the TEST WAV, close the app.
I move the TanahAirVocal1.wav and the TanahAirVocal1.mid file to somewhere else in my computer drive.
Then I open the TEST WAV.tracktion file.
In the Projects tab, both the imported wav and midi file are said to be missing as seen in two images below :
Now the interesting thing I found is :
in the TEST WAV tab, track-1 clip has a text "file missing" but track-2 clip still there with all the midi notes from TanahAirVocal1.mid. As seen in the image below :
Back to Projects tab, I link the missing wav file (TanahAirVocal1.wav) to TanahAirVocal2.wav file ... and link the missing mid file (TanahAirVocal1.mid) to blablabla.mid file.
Back to the TEST WAV (edit) tab, although track-1 clip name still "TanahAirVocal1" (and no "file missing" anymore), but it contains TanahAirVocal2 wave. While track-2, the midi notes still from TanahAirVocal1.mid (although I've already replaced it to blablabla.mid).
I just hope that I miss something rather than that replacing a midi file is not the feature of this app
.
Thank you for your help, Peter.
Just now I tested your instruction, so I imported .wav files put in track-1, and yes it ask me if I want to copy the content to the project folder.Peter Widdicombe wrote: Sun May 17, 2020 1:16 pm Not sure about importing MIDI files, but audio files "import" will sometimes ask if you want to COPY the content

I'm not surprised. MIDI data isn't that large; and it looks like it gets literally included in the .trkedt file directly - so I suppose there's really no need to refer to the external MIDI file once imported/included.
Snippet from a .trkedt file... Note / Beat/Length/Velocity. c might be pitchbend or controller ?
Looks like my pinkie is a little slow...

wow... thank you very much that you spare your time to check the .trkedt file regarding my question, Peter.Peter Widdicombe wrote: Mon May 18, 2020 3:38 am I'm not surprised. MIDI data isn't that large; and it looks like it gets literally included in the .trkedt file directly
So, it seems that WF11 create a "hard copy" of all the data in the midi file once the midi file is imported to the track, ya. After that WF11 doesn't care/look/search whether the source file is still in the computer drive or not because it will always use the "hard copy" which resides in the .trkedt file.
My reason is that when I want to edit the midi data, to me it's easier to edit it with my other app which can show the midi notes as musical notation rather than a block bar like in WF11 midi editor. Although I'm not hoping too much that WF11 can do external editor, but at least I hope that if I edit the midi file with another app, WF11 can rewrite/update the midi data in .trkedt file after I link back to the source file.
I wonder why in the Projects tab WF11 bother to tell that the midi file is missing since it doesn't affect at all to the midi clip in the trackso I suppose there's really no need to refer to the external MIDI file once imported/included.
Thank you once again, Peter.
