I use an app called Ram2free to free up ram whenever I think it may be neccesary.
I've found that many apps don't release their ram very well when they are closed down.
I use win 98se also.

Speaking about RAM issues, ever since I accidentally bought an extra gig of ram (for a total of 1.5gigs RamBus Ram) I havent had to even worry about ram. I was pissed at the time but I'm loving it now.

It was seriously an accident. I wanted to add a total of 512megs of super expensive 
RDram. So I got a 512meg stick. Little did I know I was supposed to install it in matching pairs 
. So I had to buy another stick. And now I have more ram than I know what to do with. Its pretty great tho
