I was thinking of a unity gain mixer, but the cross fader idea is even better. Different SFX can affect different parts of the spectrum and there's no way to get the missing part back once it's been processed. By running them in parallel you can emphasise and de-emphasise different parts of the spectrum.
Howard's idea of baking in SFX is also a good one as static SFX are an easy way to make different and interesting .oscillator shapes
