Ok, so now that i am using Mulab with with all my hardware synths (was easy to set it up once i understood how the ports worked), is there any way to use the arp (sequencer i believe it’s called) with the midi from the hardware synth? I tried adding a seq from the module view but it’s not reacting. Anyone know if this is possible?

The same way as you play synths. So when the rack is focused midi in goes to that rack and if that rack contains a sequence player in arp mode, it uses your midi in.

Which makes sense, but i can’t get my port that i am using to be a rack where i can add the step sequencer. Every time i try to drag it to the bottom to become a rack it just doesn’t go. I tried the other route, to create a rack first but could t figure out how to set the target to my midi
Out. It seems so simple but is turning out to be a nightmare. Do you want me to include a picture or something? Or can you or anyone?

But the hardware module (MAM FB-383) only has midi in, so I am using a MOTU to route it and using the MIDI out port 4 (has 1-5) . setting the midi channel to 14 (which i have set on the module)and setting that as the target module in MU. I can hear the sound, but anything I place on the rack whether it be reverb, delay any audio effcts, or midi effects on the actual rack.. doesnt affect it. Forewarned, I am a complete newb on getting all my hardware to work with MU, so I appreciate ANY HELP at all.

Ok maybe this will help more, here is my setup through MU
Input port 1 : motu port 5 output port 1 : motu port 5 (yamaha cs1x/controller) *works, can hear can record/play midi*
Input port 2 : none output port 2 : motu port 4 (MAM FB383) *works, can hear can record and play midi*

step 1: created a new rack, dragged that rack to the left side and right clicked, selected target module and picked motu port 4 out
step 2 : added step sequencer to rack on the bottom
step 3 : focused on midi instrument on left side, hit record and played small midi sequence.
step 4 : play back, but dont hear seq with arp.

Are you creating a phrase in the Sequence Player? You need a phrase in the Player which will be played by the chords you are sending it via your keyboard. In the image below I have a simple little up-down arp and if I hold down a C-E-G chord those are the notes which will play even though the phrase is C-C#-D.

It took me a while to catch on to this concept as well but it's very powerful once you've got it. No special routings are necessary.

I think I see the problem. The first part of step 1 is okay: by dragging the Rack to the left side (I'm assuming you mean 'dragging the Rack to a Track'), this Track now targets the Rack. In other words, all midi (or audio) is sent from that Track to that Rack.

The problem lies in the second part of step 1. By right clicking (the Track) and selecting the Target Module motu port 4 you actually undo the first connection (to the Rack) and make a direct connection from the Track to your motu. The Rack is now no longer a part of the signal chain.

At first it may seem a bit unclear because Composer Area Track Targeting Links are never shown anywhere in the Modular Area of Mulab. You can only 'see' it because the Track gets the name of the targeted module. But when you get the system (see for instance http://www.mutools.com/info/M8/docs/mulab/composer.html : 'A track can directly target any module at any modular level!'), it's really well thought out by the developer.

Solution: create a Rack, drag Rack to Track and connect the Event Output (blue connector) of that Rack to motu port 4 (in the Modular Area).
If motu port 4 is not yet visible in the Modular Area, just right click inside the Area -> add Module -> Inputs/Outputs -> Project Event Output.
After that you can insert the Sequence Player or the Step Sequencer in the Rack.

By the way, by default the Rack always shows the audio connection at the bottom, but by right clicking it, you can change it to 'Show Event Output', which is more convenient when you're working with hardware.
