Yes it's a purist plugin , it emulates a tb 303 sans distortion/overdrive , and does it with flying colours .
Funny how you talk about old school acid yet complain abl3 doesnt' have added features , because that is exactly what it is , pure 303 and no effin distortion

and if you want distortion , there is plenty of freeware stuff available or not so free , Cytomic the scream

LOL, okay for such tracks you can use ABL3! But not every "classic" track, is a good classic track!

I tend to agree. I'm missing some of that Acid Vibe and Soul. They may have been obsessive about getting the sound just like the original (I ll take their word for it) but I'm missing some heart.

The Roland vst is just more musical and fun for me.
Something that strikes me in general with regard to Roland products. They are very much geared towards err... making music. Which seems like a great thing for a musical instrument.

Yes and it's also hard to find "sweet spots", which is hearable in the presets, too. And something is with the sequencer I can't explain.

Using "purists" plugins is like working with the old hardware machines. To get them sounding great, you have to use additional tools. And especially in the VST world first you have to test hundreds of them, to find the next "purists" plugin again. I did this 20 years ago, but I wont do this again.

I don't have the Roland VST and ignored their plugins, because I don't like clouds, but meanwhile it seems possible to buy lifetime licenses and I'll try them, too.

Well, what gives the Roland vst it's edge are actually the extra features for me.

* The sequencer gives you an easy overview of the sequence, aspecially the all important slides (which is pretty impossible on the original). You can also tweak the sequence while it's running (also not possible on the original).

* The extra playmodes are nice. I aspecially like the "invert" option that can create some happy accidents/surprises.

* And the hidden panel gives you a bunch of extra sound options, as distortion, vcf trim etc.

* The sound is also important of course. I think they pretty much nailed the spirit of the sound, as with their other plugins. It sounds a *bit* different than the original. I guess it can be more squelchy. That's not a bad thing.

* The first sound preset is the distorted square and that's my favorite acid flavour. I always seek out that flavour on my TD-3. Again, that's the musical orientation that I like in the Roland products.
You immediately get that distorted square sound, mess about with the sequencer and you've got something going in a short time. I don't have that hands-on experience with the ABL. It's all more tedious and less user friendly.

* I don't like subscriptions either. I have mainly been using it as a sequencer tool until now, and opted for hardware for the sound source. But you can buy the Roland TB-303 now.

When talking about 303, I think first time I really noticed it was at M.R - Get To France + M.R -Listen to your heart + red5 - I love You stop tracks. I didn't know the name of that sound, so I just called it "angry didgeridoo"

But yes, that sound was so amazingly interesting and "powerful". I just fell in love it that sound right away. Not sure if I could really use it very much/know how to use it in my own works. So that's why I would not get a synth dedicated JUST for 303 (even though I love the sound).

I hope Roland has some sales from time to time. It's nice that they opened their plugins for permanent licensing, but, they're really pricey... 99 € for a TB-303 emu would already be plenty.

but it can also be master bleep. Quite a bit different tonalities are possible.

Carbon Based Lifeforms even uses it in their ambient tracks so it also works just fine in low bpm.

Low bpm? I have heard rumors about something like that, but I doubt they can be real...

Yeah, I listened to a track on DI.FM Atmospheric Breaks a couple of days ago which had a very nice 303 part in it. I wouldn't use it in every track, but, there's certainly some use cases, even in downtempo music. I think CBL overdo it a bit though. I'm not a big fan of them in general though.
