I didn't see anything on there that talks about stopping windows updates - that looks just like increasing computer privacy by stopping your computer from sending stats to microsoft.

re stopping updates, not recommended if your computer is connected to internet, lots of good arguments for not connecting your audio prod pc to internet. use system restore points, . clone your main drive to external storage, if you're obsessed (easeus, macrium, acronis). find some deepfreeze equivalent (external storage, in the name of all that is holy)
backwards compatibility is MS's best feature, so I wouldn't worry much about updates

microsoft stopped penalties for running win 10 without a license. linustechtips on youtube doesn't bother with licenses, for example.

MS sends tons of licenses to the third world for pennies, tons of which get resold for $10. MS doesn't care where they eventually get installed.

to summarize, win10 pro allows you to connect to business networks, hand off computer maintenance jobs to your co's IT dept (IT dept required), gives you a nice remote control tool (rdp), encryption for data (lots of good alternatives) - not worth it

retail lic: can be moved to new computer
oem: can't move license, stuck to one computer

cheers

Why does linus and some other young youtubers always have some corny expression on their face in the thumbnail for the video? Are they trying to cater to 12 year olds? I'm not clicking on the link just due to how they dressed the video that way.

Anyways this seems to become more an ethical question. Just because MS doesn't actively go after unlicensed or grey licensed Windows users (assuming they totally don't) doesn't change the legality or ethics of breaking the licensing agreements for this software.

I lock down windows as much as I can so that I have control over when it updates. I also like to see on the forums if a given update breaks any drivers or cause performance issues with audio. Once I have a stable system I try to keep it that way. I do use emisoft and some other tools to keep the gremlins outs. Different approach I suppose.

So good that guys like me are around to tell you then. :hihi:

For me i rather check out by myself because simply at the end my DAW have different drivers and other things installed and running then the DAW of someone else. The worst case would be to have to go back to the status before the update, not much hassle imo tho' i didn't need to do so in the past.

Tried a fair few amp sims, and to my ears this is my favourite (I mainly prefer clean / mildly overdriven tones)
Interesting that they're calling this the white knights sale

"White Knight" (also known as “Internet White Knight”) is a pejorative term used to describe men who defend women on the Internet with the assumption that they are looking for a romantic reward in return.

Actually part of the 1970s pop psychology, it's more extensive than that. Includes both genders in various plays, notably with females that bait others into relationships using this ploy for their own return as well (financial, emotional or physical).
Those years also gave us such gems as stray kitten, stray puppy, Peter Pan, and various princess syndromes.

But as Freud said, "sometimes a cigar is just a cigar."

I imagine the White Knight sale is so named because they are low on funds and enough sales will keep them afloat, the longer accepted meaning of ‘white knight’ is a friendly investor who turns up to protect a company from insolvency or a hostile takeover.

Ah fair enough, hadn’t followed the link. In Northern Scandinavia and Iceland the white nights last weeks I’ve heard.
