"14.06 changes
Added "Mode" to velocity layers and notes, which allows you to select different layers using a dedicated parameter. Useful for multiply hihat opening levels and articulations for example. The global settings also contain an option "Invert hihat controller CC#4"."

And:
"Mode controls the range of the 'mode' for this layer. The mode is attached to a CC controller, such as hihat opening, or controller directly from the rhythm."

OK, I think I can see how this works by setting mode values to notes in the rhythm editor but how is this set up with a CC controller?

Ah, just noticed the Mode CC setting in DRUMSET EDITOR> ADVANCED.

Is this to control HH open amount in an external VST via midi?

Is it possible to control MDrummers HH open position? That I don't quite see how to do that.

Your second question:
Yes, HH open position control, but actually could be used to jump through a series of any samples.
Say you had 3 HH samples: CLOSED, SEMI-OPEN, and OPEN.
In the DRUMSET EDITOR> VELOCITY LAYERS load CLOSED into the first layer slot. Set Mode range from 0% to 33%.
Add a second layer, load SEMI-OPEN to it. Set Mode range from 34% to 66%.
Add a third layer, load OPEN to it. Set Mode range from 67% to 100%.
In ADVANCED you can choose what CC number you want to use. Default is Global 004 Foot controller. And in main Settings> MIDI SETTINGS you can "invert hihat controller CC#4" if need be.
So, you could use e-drums to trigger these things, or just write the CC4 values into DAW MIDI editor...the invert thing works here too.

And if rather than Drum Pad mode you're using MIDI COMMAND method you can set the Mode value per note in the RHYTHM EDITOR ....so setting Mode value of a certain note to 20% is like (in Drum pads mode) setting CC in DAW to 20%. Bear in mind that Melda uses percentages (0-100) rather than the usual MIDI values (0-127).
If you hunt around in the MDrummer libraries you'll find suitable samples for this but my guess is that the forthcoming new sample pack might contain samples/ components already set up similar to how I've outlined above...maybe, and if not, there'll be plenty of samples organized and labeled to use in this way.

Hope this helps, I'm just figuring it all out myself.

Re your first question, probably not, I just set up a MIDI command thing in DAW feeding a simple pattern in RHYTHM editor involving mode values and recorded the MIDI output of MD....no CCs.
