What is Bazille's sequencer good for?

As I have noted elsewhere, Bazille is my favourite synth. I use it for designing strange noises. However, I do not understand the value of the sequencer. I find it awkward at doing normal sequencer things: triggering envelopes, and programming sequences longer than a single 'frame' (by 'awkward', I mean I have to check the manual or do other problem-solving). Well, if it is relatively awkward for doing normal sequencer things, maybe it compensates for this by being good at something else? This thread's purpose is to answer that question.
  • Do you like Bazille's sequencer?
  • Is it just a matter of getting used to it, whereafter it is just like any other sequencer (only it can sequence more than just notes)?
  • ... or, is it uniquely good in some way?
I'd love to know if anyone here is a fan of this sequencer, and if so, what kinds of noises they use it to make, and how it fits into their workflow. I welcome both text explanations and audio examples.

The Bazille Sequencer is awesome!!

It is so flexible and can make all sorts of lovely never repeating mayhem... it's also works as a characterful oscillator.

EDIT: I just made a quick example using the Sequencer as the only sound source. The output of the Sequencer goes to a filter and also modulates the filter cutoff and the Sequencer also modulates an Osc which modulates the Sequencer. Finally I used a Bitwig modulator to modulate the Snapshot Morph of the sequencer which is why it will never repeat exactly the same. Added a bit of external reverb (Valhalla)

I really like this, thanks for sharing! Eerie yet charming.

You said that an oscillator is modulating the sequencer... by that do you mean it is modulating the 'rotate' knob?

Yes, modulating rotate... and in this case, the Sequencer output was phase modulating the Osc, which was modulating rotate...

Here is another quick example (boring sound) to show the result of using 2 multiplied 4 step sequencers running at different speeds... creates its own unique groove

EDIT: Another similar example using 2 sequences combined... this one is pitched in semitones

Thanks for sharing these. You are doing a good job of demonstrating the usefulness of Bazille's sequencer :tu:

I'm wondering, did these examples take a long time to set up? Especially the first example: I imagine it would take a while, since the sequencer was jumping between (presumably) all eight frames. What did the patterns look like for these setups, and how did you come up with those patterns? When I've messed around with the sequencer, I've found it fiddlier and slower to get ideas down when compared with the mod maps, for example, which have a similar functionality in some ways.

They were all quick to set up. The first example was just 2 frames... with a square wave LFO (pulse width adjusted) shifting between the two... and each frame was two simple 4 step sequences with different timings.

I've never set up all 8 frames. Too much work with too uncertain an outcome. I couldn't possibly visualize an outcome. I keep it simple. Another thing I do sometimes is use a ModMapper to switch between say 3 different frames. And of course you can set up say the modwheel to move the ModMapper so you get right on the specific frame you want.

btw, in case you don't know... you can copy paste frames... and yeah, it is a bit tedious to set up sequences with 12 semitone divisions...

It refuses description, allowing only the vague approach of adjectives: dark, light, raw, angelic. Who or what is making these noises? Where are they coming from and what do they point to? What kind of entity can leave such a troubling sonic remnant?

It would be much more useful if it had swing/shuffle. Not a fan of a sequencer stuck to a rigid straight groove.

This is one of many things which will be fixed in the next update.
But I cannot give a good estimate about when it will be released, we still have a few small things to fix.
