Found a top drawer free 909 guys.
https://vst4free.com/plugin/2376/
Graphically looks good and sounds amazing. Just comparing it to the Roland 909 VST today (as I have the Roland one demo'd atm) and to be honest, they both sound pretty close.
First off, both on the their original 909 default patches, the kick on DR-910 is higher pitched, lowering the Tune amount to match and still a little different but both brilliant. The Roland 909 has more softness to it and sounds kinda more spongey if that makes sense, softer. The DR has a bit more punch or knock to it. There was also a very very slight bit of hiss to the DR kick that you could hear after the kick decayed and the Roland, absolutely clean, so the samples are cleaner or however the kick sound is put into the Roland, if anyone has any more info here, welcomed.
The snare again has a bit more of a knock to it than the Roland and is less soft, very very similar though. The Rimshot on the Roland is lower pitched but they sound identical and there's no pitch control of that on the DR to adjust. I tested the ride cymbal as well and they're almost identical. The DR one was a bit lower pitched and a bit quieter by default, increasing the volume and adjusting the pitch and they were identical.
Will compare the DR and the Roland one's later to a real 909 on You Tube, see how it compares to that but it's very very good.
EDIT - Downside, no Shuffle.

Samples from Mars, Goldbaby & also the Riemann #909 are all good Samples.
Yet & This is how I read it first, I would still prefer Synthesis for generating kicks to start with, just because of the smoother and more natural sounding Tuning, those will deliver. OT, though.

What is "Natural"? Drums from Mars are simply present, Boom and Tschak.El°HYM wrote: Tue Jul 28, 2020 10:13 am Samples from Mars, Goldbaby & also the Riemann #909 are all good Samples.

Natural in being able to properly tune a synthesized Kick (analog/digital). Thats not really possible with a Sample, or lets say a very different Approach. But like I said, if #samples work for you; those SfM are top notch, for sure. You might also want to check out Goldbaby`s, they also offer quite a few #free packs: https://www.goldbaby.co.nz/freestuff.html

Do you know why they were abandoned, as the whole series of those drumboxes was actually pretty neat?

I wouldn't call it abandonware. The product is still for sale and presumably works with the latest operating systems. Never was crazy about their effect range but D16 Group make some great noisemakers.

Drumzon (2007) was the only decent sounding one IMO. The 808 was below average and the 606 was totally off. 2009 was probably the last time they tweaked the Drumazon synthesis engine any. Its been abandonware for many years.

Different definition of abandonware, I guess. I thought it had to be off market to be classed as such. Just checked the specs on their website and the products should run on the latest operating systems.
They could develop the sound modules and upgrade to something circuit modeled, of course. Though I wouldn't expect such a thing of any developer.
When it comes to using either a VSTi or samples, I would always favour a VSTi. I would still favour the VSTi over hardware for the sake of practicality but I would favour the hardware for sound - if authenticity matters then it can't really be avoided.

To be honest I dont own any of those 'older' series; which have seem to be 'updated' in 2015 for the last time. Same as the Lush101 (Talking about the nice Noisemakers they made) which is pretty sad, as that one, was a really good sounding synth, too. Actually also has some neat drumsets inside, but then again seems the same Engine / Timeperiod as the other Boxes. But who knows, they may still be updated some Day, nevertheless.

So if a product is considered finished by its developer then it's "abandonware" ? A product has to be constantly updated during its lifespan to not be considered abandoned ?

I dont think those are abandoned (wouldnt make any sense regarding their other products). They just havent been updated since about 5 Years, for whatever reason. The Silverline & Punchbox all have newer updates. I like D16, btw.
