I just helped a friend installing Waveform 11, and ran into something I'd seen before and shrugged off...
When trying to run Waveform in "simplistic mode" on a laptop, using the internal speakers and built in mike, it looks like the Windows default is to run the audio at 48 and the microphone at 44.1. This makes it virtually impossible to use Waveform, as input and output apparently have to be at the same rate. Even when plugging in a small USB mixer, the same was found. If you set input, you have to do it twice, and it blows away the input; but you can record. You then have to go back and set output without an input selected.
Resolution was to set the audio output for the onboard audio to 44.1, and then it worked perfectly for both internal audio, and for the USB mixer. While it IS an audio issue, some mention of what to do might be useful. It took me a while (probably about 15 minutes) to do the workaround, but I can see a novice simply giving up...

what is known about notebook/headphone use?
to me it seems that there is loss of monitoring quality, when mixing SR is not the same as audio chip SR.
so I change it in the windows system (audio settings Realtek in my case).
there is invisible conversion happening, but I think we should avoid it.
what about the music input clips? obviously I can mix anything with anything, and there is on-the-fly conversion.
so, at first glance, when the mic (or input jack) driver delivers 44100, should we mix at 44100, or does it not matter, or should we convert with a pro software?

Go with 44.1 since 90% of the sample packs are sampled at 44.1.
If you dig through your mp3 library you will find a similar result. Most mp3 of popular titles are 44.1.
If you don't mind resampling you can go with 48khz, but I guess you won't notice the difference in sound quality of your fx plugins.

It's going to be pretty bad with onboard audio unless you install ASIO4ALL to get some kind of ASIO support. Did Tracktion used to have a button that would download and install that, or did I imagine it?

I think I'm thinking of a 3rd party open source library that would let you save as mp3 format, due to licensing weirdness, at the time. So not ASIO4ALL related at all. But still, installing that is kind of a minimum requirement, with no hardware interface, on windows
