As soon as possible. Cannot yet give an M9 release time. More details about M9 will follow as soon as the core r&d is done, hopefully in a couple of weeks.

Oh boy! New user here. So will I be able to update to version 9 for free or will it be a paid upgrade (I expect the latter).

It won't be a free update, but nothing has been decided yet. In fact i'm evaluating the idea of switching to a higher price, but with free updates for life. So buy a user license once and get all updates for free, including the main updates like M10, M11, M12, ... all for free. For existing users there would be a fair upgrade path from their current user license to the Free Updates For Life license. It's just an idea. Nothing decided yet.shortyedwards wrote: Tue Jul 21, 2020 3:23 pm Oh boy! New user here. So will I be able to update to version 9 for free or will it be a paid upgrade (I expect the latter).
What do you think about the idea?

I don´t think lifetime free updates would be a good idea in the long run. This would create a big revenue today, but what about five years from now? There´d be zero income from your existing user base and you need to attract new users all the time. Works for Image Line, didn't for Cakewalk. But these are/were other companies...

Agree. Image Line also keeps on making money with great Synths etc.shorty wrote: Wed Jul 22, 2020 3:53 am I don´t think lifetime free updates would be a good idea in the long run. I second that! Rather maybe think about optional subscription model. With such a good base price and not being a large development team, it would probably be ridiculously cheap for users, yet providing steady, long-term cash flow. I would definitely consider jumping on the wagon...shorty wrote: Wed Jul 22, 2020 3:53 am I don´t think lifetime free updates would be a good idea in the long run. Both models are ok for me. Having spent a considerable amount of money on complete Melda which is for lifetime, I am always happy when something new pops up for free.Biscotto wrote: Wed Jul 22, 2020 4:15 amAgree. On the other hand, I fully understand Jo has to make a living. Mulab has been attractive in the past because of the huge amount of functionality you get for the money. Paid updates are no must. The previous version can still be used.
As I appreciate how Jo listens to his users and develops his products, I am happy with either decision. Subscriptions are nothing I want in my ballpark, however.

Yearly update fees are ok as they are very reasonably priced. Even the initial purchase is very good.
I'm ok with the current setup and also welcome a lifetime purchase. Any reason why you can't offer both options?
I am completely against the capitalist subscription regime, and would abandon this or any other project the moment it was implemented.

A couple of thoughts:
1) Jo releases great updates throughout the year, but we only pay for the major ones. An annual paid update seems a better match with the ongoing MuLab release schedule.
2) Because MuLab has kept the same price while adding more features, it makes sense to increase the price for new buyers and include one year of updates.
