I heard an advert for the new Manics album on the telly earlier and the song playing was awful. It got me thinking - How bad are the Manics? These are my thoughts:

- Very, very bad name.
- Said they were going to split after first album but didnt
- Backwards-looking music sound on their first two albums (who really needs an indie band doing 70s FM rock?)
- Tinny goth on the third album - totally anaemic
- Horrible Ford Mondeo man music on the rest of the albums
- Toy lyrics that pretend to sound clever and intelligent, but sound like six formers rebelling by reading the Communist Manifesto.
- Doing almost nothing in public about a very troubled band member and not doing anything about the death cult that was springing up around him
- If they ever meant their politcs, then they sold out completly, showing their true colours. Nicky Wire was promoting Dido in the Observer the other week.

What do you all think?

Your entitled to your opinion about this band music but what did you expect them to do in public.

Very true
But if you ever hung around with the kids obsessed with Richy Edwards and watched them cut themselves to pieces in deference to him, it was heartbreaking.
Yes they were depressed before, but the mutilation was influenced by him. It is not his fault, but nothing was done by the others in the band and by the culture that sprang up around them.
There is nothing romantic about being a depressive - I know.

heehee ...

... i quite like the lyrics too (but not just richies - i equally admire MOST of nicky wires words) ... they might be clumsy reactionaries but they still DO take on lyrical subjects that most wont go near ...

Now this is a personal problem I have with them - or else posting this wouldnt be half as fun

Its the same reason I dont really like Monty Python.
Yes they are good, and some stuff (e.g Life of Brian) is very funny, but always seemed to me:
"Right in my History degree, I learned that so-and-so was alive in 1763, but not in 1971, so it will be really funny to have him there"

Manics lyrics: "I learned the history of the Vietnam war - Lets set the chronology of it to music"

Anyway Closer by Joy Division pisses all over Richey's lyrics

Well, I liked the stuff on the Holy Bible. Not liked anything by them since that though, and I never really listened that hard to the lyrics... Just seemed like great music. :D
Music with dinner is an insult both to the cook and the violinist.

Meh.... I don't care if they've sold out, I don't care if retarded mentally unstable kids want to cut themselves whilst moshing the Manics, I don't even care that their lyrics aren't as profound...

I just don't like their music. Its formulaic whip cream. Cheese on toast.

I do like the Manics, I must admit. But their musical direction of late has left me a little baffled. There last album was pretty average, and this latest offering sounds like pure, undiluted filth. Im not one to begrudge change but i think the Manics have strayed a little to far with this one.

good once, shite now.
