but Nora was not for me personally, I tried the CM version once and didn't go further.
On the other hand Phrasebox was easy to grasp and is instant fun.

There are a lot of similarities between Nora and Phrasebox. I considered Nora before getting Phrasebox but Nora has not seen an update in years. I was hesitant to invest money in what looked like a dead product. Phrasebox is being actively developed and has a very responsive developer.
Nora definitely has the edge in terms of number of presets.
I played with both Nora CM and the Phrasebox demo. I found Phrasebox easier to use.

Hi everyone!
I hope you are all doing well! Interestingly, I was just re-comparing these two just the other day. I had from about day 1 and bought Phrasebox basically from day one as well. Like others, I was looking for something ‘better and newer’ than Nora. Like most things they both seem to have their strengths. I find them quite different even though the end game is kind of the same. I should point out I tend to use them both as a ‘piano pattern’ generator 1st. So that’s the angle I’m coming from.... I’m often away from my desk (have a laptop) so I will use these to get piano ideas down.
Personally, I still like Nora the best. The layout of the notes broken out into octaves makes sense to me and I move around it fast! I like noras randomization tools, especially the ‘mutate’ tab which just alters the current pattern. You can load in a midi file (Nora will just read the rhythmic info) and produce a single line pattern. Not exciting for sure, but after adding some additional notes and then ‘mutating it’ (sometimes heavily) you can end up with some interesting flowing lines.
With Phrasebox, I find it is a happy accident generator for me. I rarely have 8 notes in a chord (though I know this opens up other possibilities like sending it a scale of 8 notes and using Phrasebox to help create a melody) so when the randomizer gives me notes in silent lanes, I do get surprising results when I move them around into the ‘special lanes’ at the top. I love the ability to send controller data (especially #64!) and love the chance parameters. Not keen on default note velocity being 127 (Tell me that’s user error please!) and that I can’t sweep thru the velocity levels while left clicking and dragging.
As far as ‘snapping to a scale’, I don’t like how there are limited options in Phrasebox. Nora allows custom scales and comes with a second vsti called NoraHarm which works just like ableton lives scale midi effect. Though if I’m being honest I love c minor (!) and don’t usually get too exotic anyway...
