Since I have designed platforms before (as a mechanical engineer), I know exactly what this thread is about....but I don't understand what anyone is saying. I won't talk about platforms though. Though I might talk about stairways and walkwalks since I have designed those also.

I still hope that, a couple years down the road after the change, U-He can afford to hire/train a touch screen developer expert and, in the process of making something new rather than a retrofit, will finally have something working really well on phones and tablets, as well.

Well, I for one appreciate the heads up from Urs. This is very encouraging news as it also means that most likely all the other major players in plugin land will have plugins ready to go upon launch.

Been thinking of creating a Mac laptop system that I then "freeze" in time, aka not adding any more plugins and fluff to it, treating it kind of like external hardware synth/fx/creative box (while keeping the studio PC as a Windows system and totally bloated with stuff). I've already decided to wait for the new silicon and see how it performs. If it is even moderately close to the current Macbook Pro top of the line then it'll be a quite easy decision.

Hopefully Zebra 3 will be done by then too as I'm really looking forward to that one. Never really got along with Zebra 2 for some strange reason (though I do try, over and over again with the demo over the years).

Not angry, just tired of *any* platform arguments.

People identify with their opinion. When people question someones perspective, that feels like an existential threat to ones ego. That is why people get mad arguing about which players a sports team should hire and what their strategy should be. It does not matter what it is, as long as someone thinks of what they think is an integral part of who they are (identity), then any argument about that means emotional defence mechanisms are triggered.

To what extend people are effected by this is a matter of their level of awareness. People who get all worked up simply are not aware. The best way for people with more awareness is to accept that people do not all see through this to the same extent. And then only address factual aspects if there are any.

A question to Urs, as my iMac is 9 years-old and strains with Diva, I am itching to get a new iMac when the next generation is available. I am assuming it will be Intel-based, going from numerous sources. If I want to be able to fully use Zebra 3 and Diva for the next six years without a complication, should I upgrade when the new generation iMac is available or would patience be a virtue I should embrace?

I think 5 years was roughly the time we managed to continue PowerPC support once it was faded out by Apple. I guess we’ll have 2 years until Intel vanishes from Apple products and then roughly 5 years of support until it may get difficult to continue releasing compatible software.

I think it’s logical iOS devices don’t feature Thunderbolt as that is a high performance interface. With higher energy consumption, higher cost and features you can live without in a mobile device.

Since Apple and intel co-developed Thunderbolt, Apple will have a strategy at the ready for Macs. Worst case scenario: an adapter cable.

I read somewhere that Apple said that the Apple Silicon Macs will support Thunderbolt.

In no way do I want to take away from the U-He team being brilliant, but the simple fact is Urs started coding for AU on OS X only at first. We both used to post a lot on osxaudio.com, I remember his first AUi synth Zoyd. He since obviously transitioned over to Windows as well. I think it's obvious it's a distinct advantage him and his team have over folks who started in Windows and ported an OS X version.

Not at all wanting to start a platform war, just wanted to shout out Urs's roots and how it affects his cool calm and collected attitude towards any curve ball he gets thrown.
