FR: Ability to NOT have a track route to the main output section

Other DAWs let you route things how you want, without having to go to the main output. Waveform routes to the main output section no matter what.

Example of why this is an issue: I just installed an Expert Sleepers USAMO. It requires audio gets routed to an external unit (output on my Clarett 4pre). Unfortunately, the MIDI clock and other notes it generates as audio gets routed to the main output, so that the left channel is screwed up, essentially rendering that output meter useless.

I'll next try to bypass that whole master section (except for Sonarworks) and have to route tracks into another track and call it "Main Output" or something, so that at least the meters on that channel may be accurate and useful.

I'm not 100% if you mean what I think you mean, but you can tell a track where to output on the right-hand side of the Plugin panel. To the Right of Mute and Solo is the output button, where you can tell each track where to output.

Correct. But you can't just tell it to not go anywhere. They all end up hitting the master output.

Why would you route a track to a 'null' track rather than Mute the track?

If you cant Mute the track something is on, just send it to into another track and mute that.

If you mute a track, then there's nothing that can happen from that track. That's different than not having an endpoint, or at least not having the endpoint be the master output.

If I mute the track that the Insert is on, then the Insert stops working. Definitely not achieving the goal - that's making it worse.

Every track can be routed to a dedicated audio output of your interface (right side). If you don't want audio output, turn down the volume of that track.
If you want to block midi, use the midi routing vst to block channels of your choice.

Yep. But that still doesn’t address the issue.

I’ve run into this issue before, but it was a year or two ago I think (it’d be in a thread here). It’s more an issue with hardware involved.

In this case, placing a volume plugin and turning it to zero doesn’t do anything to solve the issue of the master section level meters still reflecting the audio being routed out at a very hot level - no matter where the channel is routed to or the volume it’s at. The audio going out doesn’t come back in so there’s no need for it to show in the master section. But Waveform forces the issue and does it anyway.

Perhaps the routing to null isn’t the issue in this case (but, again, I’ve had an issue with it before). Maybe it’s an issue more with Inserts - if audio is routed out but not back in on the same channel, then don’t show the audio going through.

If it is just the audio, stick an extra copy of the Volume and Pan plugin at the very end of the track's mixer and turn the volume on it all the way down.

If you need to block MIDI also, you can do this with an FX rack - add a new one to the very end of the track's mixer and clear all the wiring.

Yes. Route audio out of the DAW without having it hit the DAW mixer.

One way to do that, but not the only way, is just to be able to route the track to nothing (because the Insert routes it out). Alternatively, the Insert could have a bypass DAW mixer checkbox, for example.
