but a nice mix, also you seem more comfortable vocally, nice work 8)
It's a Beatles like song and not terribly difficult to sing to begin with so that helped a lot. I basically tried to mix it like the original so having the reference.
well it still takes work even if you have an original as reference, probably more so than if your doing an original really, as you have no target to compare with, so its done when youre happy.
trying to match an original, you dont have the luxury of artistic choice.

True. Each has its pluses and minuses.

3rd track from my upcoming CD "Killer Kovers"

Another one from 1987.

For all the people over the years who have constantly told me I sound like the lead singer of The Buggles...

Well, I guess this makes it official.

I'm one of those who mentioned Trevor Horn. He was actually a very good producer too, and bass player.
Anyway, this is good. Its an authentic cover.
The piano is mixed a little too hot in relation to the vocals. Apart from that I enjoyed it. :tu:
If thats a vocaloid, its pretty good. First time I heard it I thought you'd hired a singer, but afterwards I discerned it was vocaloid.
Well done though.

Thanks. Yes, the piano is louder than on the original. Honestly, I hated the mix of that song as far as the piano. It was buried in the background and EQ'd to the point where there was almost no remnant of a piano at all. So yeah, I made an artistic decision to record the piano (still used a CP 80) the way I would have done it had I mixed the song. To this day I still don't understand why they processed the piano the way they did.

Honestly, it's doubtful. Only because I don't know any of their songs. Everything I've done so far is a song that I grew up with and really only had to learn how to play properly. Everything else, the arrangements, the vocals, even the overall sound, is ingrained in my head. I can even sing these in the right key without music. To learn a song now, from scratch, at my age, would be very difficult. My own songs? Not a problem because there are no expectations. I can do whatever I want. Hit record, start playing and that's the song. If I don't like something, no problem. Scratch the take and try something else. Duplicating a song that you know intimately well, is hard enough. Duplicating a song that you don't know at all? Forget it. It would take me weeks and weeks of listening to the song before it even started to become familiar to me.

So for this project, I'm sticking to songs I already know. Now if somebody suggests a song that I already know, sure, I'll be happy to do it. Unfortunately, I never even heard of Mercury Rev until they were mentioned at this forum. And yes, I liked what I heard. But to learn one of their songs from scratch would be an enormous amount of work.

Thanks. The one vocaloid on the bridge sounds very close to the girl on the record. The chorus, not so much. But I worked with what I had. I don't exactly have a ton of female singers banging down my door begging to sing my songs.

4th track from my upcoming CD "Killer Kovers"

This one, my favorite song from 1979.

Some of the great things this project has done for me.

1. It's gotten me out of my laziness. If I put in this much attention to detail on my own songs, well, who knows what I'd be capable of.

2. It's taught me a lot about arrangement and how it can make all the difference in the world.

3. It's forced me to think outside the box in achieving certain FX. The result is the use of a lot more automation. Some things are simply not possible without it.

4. It has made me appreciate these songs even more now that I hear what goes into them to make them sound so good. Some of these bands make things sound so easy. Trust me, they're not. Some of this stuff is very complex.

I hope that when this project is over, I will start to put this much effort into my own music, especially when it comes to creating arrangements. I think that's one area where I tend to get a little lazy and settle for "good enough."

Anyway, this one came out really good. I channeled my best Nick Garvey (lead singer) that I could muster.

Enjoy!
