I suppose it depends on what kinds of sounds you are looking for.

The best sounding virtual amps I’ve tried are by NeuralDSP and they have fully functional trials. I prefer the cleaner sounds from their Abasi and Plini models, but they can produce gritty metal if that’s what you’re after too. For an all rounder check out their Nolly model.

that's unfortunate. i use amplitube, i can get some decent guitar sounds out of it. but i have to heavily customize the presets to my own liking. i guess it really depends what sorts of guitar sounds are you into. i would not go back to micing my amps. firstly, i don't have great quality rooms, or great quality amps or great quality mics. the amplitube stuff sounds as good and works better for DAW recording . if i had one of those $10k amps then yes, but not joe shmo $500to $1K touring amps. makes no sense.

I got Guitar Rig at version 1. I didn't know about anything else then. I first used the Fender Twin or one of those with a Stratocaster.
I got a pretty viable sound out of it, but I was inputting via a Tone 6 box; what this means is I was giving it a more or less correct amount of signal.
I never got on very well with the high gain types in it.

Amplitube Jimi Hendrix I acquired a few year later. Now, if you give this thing a lot of gain, you can drive it into very realistic rattling, a truly uncanny effect. The distortion and the particular chain is probably something to look at here as well. And I went with the Fender again for a clean-ish take with Amplitube and it was pretty good, although here I spent a whole_lot_of_time. I had a great workflow with it and FX plugins in an overdrive chain. People remarked on tone from my tracks a few times. It's drive this and drive what that drives and push it into the red like mad.

So my idea of this whole subject is <what plugin sim> amounts to the lesser struggle; <is there enough gain driving the thing> is the greater struggle. for a clean, not high gain tone as well

I wouldn't expect further development of Guitar Rig, because I believe it would be an investment drag for NI; ie., trying to make it competitive with other newer things takes a war chest that isn't viable so there just isn't the will for it.

NI could employ Efflam Le Bivic better. He programmed Mokafix guitar goodies back in the day, he certainly could help Guitar Rig 6 advance. But they make him do Reaktor ensembles and graphical interfaces.

I think the ship has sailed. It's been a while since NI released anything decent that is not samples anyway. Massive X was meh. I wish they revived B4 Hammond, but it's just not realistic. Competition is way ahead.

I think it's done and over for good. I don't really miss it. As I said, competition makes up for it tenfold.

I used the Fuse Audio F-59 on this track - just effing around at home one afternoon. I don't mind the F-59 and I hope they make a Deluxe Reverb sim.

I should mention that in my other project (ambient / electronic beats) my buddy uses only Guitar Rig and he makes it sound really great. I must be just doing it wrong and I should give Guitar Rig another chance.

GR shines on things that you don’t mind sounding processed so fine for big shimmery echoes and the like

I have gotten some good sounds with Amplitube. I also use S-Gear a lot and use various other effects in combination with that. S-Gear is interesting because it was written by a guy who designed amps for Marshall, so it's more like he's modeling the way that he would have designed the amps. And the focus is more clean to mid gain, so that may be in your lane. It also has a killer reverb.

I find Massive X to be a lot more usable than OG Massive. However, it came out a year late and even after a year past that and three point releases, it still doesn't feel finished. Hopefully that isn't a sign of other problems at the company.

Neural DSP stuff is great. I'm selling Nolly at the moment, i can cut you a deal if you're interested.
When it comes to simple, no-nonsense, no bells and whistles, but very solid sounding amps, TH-U is amazing too. I first got the Rock Edition, which is only a couple of amps, cabs and pedals + their rig-player. You can buy extra rigs - they sample amps, kinda like a Kemper would. Some of their rig libraries sound absolutely bonkers. I have no idea why TH-U doesn't get the recognition it deserves. The base models of the rock edition are amazing too. Take a listen before you decide Neural DSP is for you.
