Using a microphone, and copy/paste

Couple of different questions. First one is about using a mic. I have a presonus audiobox USB. Mic is plugged into input 1. I push the 48v button, and I can hear myself in the mic.. But none of the line monitors are moving, and nothing records. I did dig down into the audiobox window on the track, and I can see THAT line monitor moving on input 1. I know I'm missing something basic here. Ultimately, I also want to use my TAL Vocoder. I put it on as an effect, but since I can't seem to get mic input working yet, obviously this isn't working either.

Second, is also a absolutely nubie question. How do I copy and paste a "loop"? I use that term generally. I record 4 bars of something, now I call that a loop. I want to copy that and paste it later in the song. I have no problem dragging the end of it so it repeats itself over and over. But what if I want it to stop and start again later in the song? I know this is basic, but I can't seem to find it.

Finally got my studio set up completely today, now I'm starting to use the software, so I'm sure i'm going to have more questions. Some I learned on youtube, but some I just can't seem to find quickly..

update, I have figured out how to get the microphone to go through MuLab, so I'm good on that. However, the TAL Vocoder doesn't seem to make robot sounds. My voice barely makes any changes running through it. Any suggestions appreciated. and the copy and paste answer eludes me still.

Link-Copy = Ctrl/Cmd-C; Cut = Ctrl/Cmd-X; Paste = Ctrl/Cmd-V (Ctrl=PC; Cmd=Mac). So click a part, then click on the sequencer where you want it do go and paste.

Or click the part and -- drag to Move, Ctrl-drag to Link-Copy, Ctrl-Shift-drag to Copy new Instance (um, that's configurable, I might have switched it for Ctrl vs Ctrl-Shift).

Link-Copy is where two parts are separated in the sequencers (even on different tracks) but changes to one affect all because they use the same sequence - you get a little link symbol in the part header. Copy new Instance means you get a separate part and it's nothing to do with where it came from any more as it's also created a copy of the sequence. If you have the browser open showing sequences, you'll see whether you're making a linked copy or not -- if it's a linked copy, you don't get a new sequence.

Those terms are how I think of it -- probably not what it says in the docs...

I don't use TAL. Does it have a mixer inside between input and effect signals?

Vocoders often use two inputs, one for the carrier and one for the modulator. If TAL works like that, the setup would look like this:

I'm using a MUX vocoder here, but the TAL vocoder might look the same with 2 inputs (the red inputs in the Vocoder module)

Thank you for the copy and paste info.

The TAL has both carrier and signal. and an equalizer. I can hear that it slightly changes my voice when I push certain buttons, but even the change sounds like only the equalizer is on, not the signal part. I will check in the module section for what it looks like.

You need a file (PNG, JPG) and then go into the full editor and click the "Attachments" tab. If you're on Windows, "Snip & Sketch" is handy for this kind of thing (rare praise from me for a Microsoft tool).
