FR: Dealing with multi-channel (beyond stereo) recordings

I'm probably in the minority, but Tracktion is the main way I work, so:
I am a field recordist and often I record multiple channels well beyond the two for stereo. My recorder can create either a single mono file for each track or a single poly file with multiple tracks. There are some reasons to have a single poly file and various ways DAWs deal with them. For example Reaper keeps the poly file in a single track and displays all the poly tracks. Audacity on the other hand splits each of the poly tracks into it's own mono track on import. Tracktion seems to look at the first two channels and import that as a stereo track and ignore the rest. I don't know the best implementation, but at least I would like the option of a pulldown menu to select which tracks I'd like to see, or on import a dialog to ask how to import or which poly tracks to import. I hope that makes some sense, with ambisonics becoming more popular it seems like a much needed feature.
Thanks!
