Sure, there's always gonna be a fail on Youtube. Or Soundcloud. Or in the perception thereof.
One learns to get over it.
Or maybe we simply need to do comparison examples ourselves. We never did them because it's utterly tempting to fake a nearly identical sound and make it look like a piece of cake. But it isn't a piece of cake. Try getting the same sound from two vintage Pro-Ones. In reality "never twice the same sound" is a part of the package, and it's up to people to decide whether this nails it or not. I feel like we would have to do an educational video first where we explain what to expect and what to look out for, and what are the pitfalls of judgement. I'm just not sure if we want to spend that time.

I totally get it.
Though...since you bring it up...I think it would be absolutely worth someone with your level of expertise on the topic doing some videos to point the "what to look for, what not to look for, here's how the same synth is different with itself over different days" type of video just to educate people on the topic more broadly. Not even in relation to any one product. Not saying that needs to be you guys, but someone should.

Dear god, yes, Urs, that is EXACTLY what needs to be done, I think.Urs wrote: Tue Sep 29, 2020 3:03 pmI feel like we would have to do an educational video first where we explain what to expect and what to look out for, and what are the pitfalls of judgement. I for one would be delighted to see more standalone replicants (see what I did there) of classic synths like Repro, and The Legend, Obsession etc.

asside from the time it may take, I never understood why devs don't make videos showing comparisons of the software and the hardware they are emulating (ie the specific hardware unit you used to model the software)Urs wrote: Tue Sep 29, 2020 3:03 pm Sure, there's always gonna be a fail on Youtube. would make more sense than some random yt'er making a crap "versus" video....
i guess you would still get the usual flat earth crowd claiming it was fixed tho.....

People have a different stance on those topics. In respect of comparison videos/audio demos, mine was always that it would feel weird to bluntly say "look at how well we copied this". Other people see this differently, but I kind of don't resonate with the concept.
I'm more like, I think it's legit to cover Michael Jackson's "Billy Jean", but one wouldn't showcase original and cover side by side in a video...?

yeah, i absolutely hate plugins that don't have a new plugin ID that i need to replace manually.mabian wrote: Tue Sep 29, 2020 2:02 pm
Totally fine for me, as long as it has a brand new plugin ID to avoid replacing Diva 1.

the latest offender being FabFilter Saturn.
I don't care for finished projects - if i reopen them it's to rework them anyway into something new, and in-progress projects nothing is set in stone until the final master so i don't care if something changes. i'll just tweak it
i totally get tho - why you'd like them separate, it's totally a personal preference thing

it very simple for ppl to do that themselves, but not simple at all to access the hardware a dev uses when making a soft version.Urs wrote: Tue Sep 29, 2020 9:11 pm People have a different stance on those topics. That takes away from something productive.EvilDragon wrote: Tue Sep 29, 2020 3:23 pmDear god, yes, Urs, that is EXACTLY what needs to be done, I think.Urs wrote: Tue Sep 29, 2020 3:03 pmI feel like we would have to do an educational video first where we explain what to expect and what to look out for, and what are the pitfalls of judgement. The key to productivity is not to chose what to do but mainly what not to do.
The obvious aspect to this is not doing things that are not important.
Less obvious and harder is choosing not to do some of the good things to make time for more important things.
Sacrificing things that you would love to do to focus on what is most important, that is hard but necessary if you try to do something that few people manage to achieve.
The more brutal you are in eliminating things that do not contribute to your main goals, the better your chances.

Then you would get people wishing that old projects would automatically load with 2.0 so they could do a quick bounce with minimal mousing about.claudedefaren wrote: Tue Sep 29, 2020 3:30 pm Different plugin ID for Diva 2 would be best IMO, so we could keep using Diva 1 for old projects

However, threads like a recent one in Instruments forum potentially draw sales to other companies based on a misinformation or misunderstandings. Now that we have a product specialist with focus on video production, it would be a piece of cake to show some things that we deem important when emulating stuff, which yet we can't see it in competing emulations. As an example, inherent CV-bleed-through in certain filter circuits or certain effects in envelopes when played repetitively. Which all account for a certain character and are absolutely audible and not esoteric at all.
