I record on one track and i have playback when recording the second track but, track one gets recorded into track two and i cant seem to stop that from happening. Meaning the play back gets recorded into track two ???? i use a beheringer Xair 18 digital mixer and i cant seem to figure out how to stop the playback from getting recorded into the second track from track one when i am recording the second track with track one as a playback.
Any help would be appreciated !

What are you trying to record? My guess is that it's voice, or something through microphones, and not something like electric piano, electronic drums, or line-in guitar...
The problem is, that IF you record with a microphone, remember the microphone will pick up ANY sound in the same room, including previously recorded material that you are listening to (playing along with...) at the same time.
To avoid this WHEN recording using microphones. listen to the playback of previous tracks with headphones, and turn the monitor speakers off. That way, the microphone only "hears" your voice (or accoustic guitar...), so that will be the only thing recorded on track 2, 3, 4... as you overlay additional things.
If it really is only audio NOT using a microphone doing this, then you have to learn settings on the digital mixer, and remember you normally DON'T want to record on the overall mix, but from am alternate bus that ONLY has enabled the instruments being recorded. On a traditional mixer, that's typically an alternate bus if you have one; otherwise you may have to get creative in feeding only that one instrument in.

Hey ... Thanks for posting up a reply in regards to my query ... Appreciate the insight but i do get what you are saying and no, im using electric instruments to record and not just a microphone. It isnt the microphone causing the sound to picked up while recording multiple tracks .. As waveform plays back the track it seems to record the playback into the new track. I want to be able to monitor previous track but not have it played into the new track with me already trying to record another instrument on that track ... Waveform keeps routing the playback of (hypothetically) track 1 into the new one im trying to record .. I wish there was a way to take screen shots of what the mixer settings were like and maybe then you could guide me better. is there a way to do this while posting a reply?

Does Waveform see all 16 or 18 inputs distinctly as selectable inputs? And is one pair the "mix" output of the Behringer? If so, do NOT record from the master channel, and you can select the specific input(s) you want. In fact, to test that set up all of your individual instruments for input simultaneously, and look at the input meters. Each instrument you play should ONLY show up on one channel.
Playback from waveform, to make things simpler, should go to the master stereo channel presumably where your monitors (or headphones) will be.
I would guess at least 1/3 of the members here have a stereo input to waveform, either through a "personal input device" like a focusright, scarlett, or USB mixer that supplies only a stereo output; and all have slightly different workflows...

Thank you for that ! ... that was the solution in regards to getting them give an output without it being recorded on other tracks in waveform .. as soon as i switched the input for the usb interface to 18/18, it worked perfectly and i think that is what you were hinting at there in your reply .. Could i pose another question which might seem stupid but im really new at this ! How do i get the FX to play through the recording on waveform after i have the individual channel playing the fx already meaning, i can hear the fx active as i play but the recorded version in waveform doesnt get the fx being sent through ? Ive tried a lot of trial and error over the past couple of days but am not able to get that to wrk out ... Ive check the routing under sends and the meter tabs in the mixer input and output page but to no avail ! Any help would be appreciated !

Several challenges again.
- What FX is being used (per channel, VST on the right hand side)?
- You do realize there can be FX on each channel, and FX on
Waveform master (stereo)output?
- are you listening to the individual outs on the 18, or the master waveform output
(and where is the master output going...) ?
- are you listening differently during recording, and during playback? (i.e. using headphones or combined mix through monitors... where are headphones and/or monitors connected...)?
I'm also assuming here you haven't got into send busses on waveform yet, 'cause while useful, you really have to understand signal paths to use them effectively. Particularly where effectively you have effectively the Waveform mixer, plus an external 18-channel mixer.
