VPS Avenger could fit your needs. Its pretty good for inspiration, for Drums for everything if you like preset browsing. Crafting your own patches is a bit of a hussle bc its so HUGE and extensive. The expansion packs are very good and you can choose from lots of different subgenres & sound is really really good.

Sylenth, Rapid, Dune 3, Spire (especially for big leads, great!)

Good call. I think those would complement Serum very well. Modern sound, better supersaw than Serum. Sylenth1 + Massive was a good combo for many producers, so, I'd assume that (especially) Spire + Serum would make a very good combo.

I use Serum mostly for hard DnB and soft IDM stuff and over the years I bought very much soundbanks for it and it can sound really different, but overall it's mostly "fat, but cold" sound.

Sylenth has a very nice OSC sound and I use it mostly for "simply but good working in the mix sounds" and it has a nice warm character.

Dune3 sounds absolute amazing and I use it often for different sounds, but it's workflow is a bit difficult compared to the others, but also a really great synth and worth to learn!

Rapid is a wave table power synth, especially if you use the analog filter, it sounds really warm and fat, also with only one instance! And with its layers you can build really fat sounds!

Spire is my trance leads synth, because it's very present in the mix, if I'm layering much sounds.

I'm a NI hater, so I don't use Massive, but it's one of their good synths :D

My main DAW is FL Studio, and I am mostly using Serum & FLEX at the moment. Time to time Sytrus (but I find it’s not very comfortable to use).

What VSTi would be good companion for especially with Serum? Maybe something with more “softer” sound if you know what I mean?

I really enjoy using Serum & I find all the tutorials out there to be very helpful. But still, I do miss some warmer sounds. Suggestions?

My music style is focused heavily on EDM (interested in all EDM styles actually).

Couple of “demands”:
Free demo to try.
Not so “harsh” sound as Serum,
Good for especially leads.
No dongle or other complicated registration shenanigans.
Easy on CPU would be very good :D
I suggest learning how to use Serum. The sounds that you’re looking for are there, you just have to know how to coax them out.

I can see where the OP is coming from though. If a synth rather lends itself to more in your face, bright, harsh sounds, of course you can also do softer sounds with it, but, they'd still sound a bit in your face.

For example, I played a bit with Massive X and Sylenth1 yesterday. I really like MX's sound, but, for strings and supersaws, Sylenth1 is definitely an authority. Sounds better to me than the strings and supersaws in MX. Once again, horses for courses. And, talking about the last 5 to 10 %, of course.

enlighten me plz - what does spire do what serum cant?

Good supersaws, for example. Sounding less harsh, and more smooth and juicy (good for plucks).

As far as I understand the OP, it's about a different flavour, not about feature overlap.

in short - 4 osc + great filters = sounds very hardware(ish)
(and a bit simpler to use, that's why Spire and Serum are buddies)
Weapons of choice (subject to change):
Godin Redline, Kuassa, Fuse Audio, Audiority, Roland A-500pro, Dune, Dagger, TAL, Reaper for Rock & Synthwave pleasures; Viper and FL Studio for guilty EDM pleasures

I would go with Diva or Dune 3, or Zebra if you like the semi-modular architecture. Ana 2 is also good. Test them all and see if you like their sound and workflow!

well those 2 more oscs (if you dont count serums sub osc) make sense. I know serum pretty well by noe but I demoed spire and I struggled so for me it was not really easier 🙈 didnt pay too much attention to the filters, what did reveal better with them - I consider serums filters really decent even better than arturias on pigments 🧐

(ps: im not arguing im just interested bc I need a reason to buy spire as well 😅)

Serum's filters are nice. Never quite understood why some don't like them.

I don't think Spire has better filters, even though they have a nice character to them, think Access Virus. Some real warmth coming from them.

And that's the major thing which makes it different from Serum IMO. It's a particularly warm sounding synth, unlike Serum. That's why I think they'd really complement each other well, because, you often need both, warm sound, and clinical precision/brightness/whatever.

I think MX has got some spectacular strings (very emotional).

Might well be because I had my headphones on. Might sound different on my monitors. :D
