Hi guys/gals

This post is a tiny bit of whinge, as well as taking a chance that someone might have some advice. Well, it'll be a lot of whinge, to be honest :) I'm probably beyond advice

I hate wires. I hate the ugliness of plastic and metal units. I hate lecci cables, all the different audio cables, the monitors, the thousands of different audio units that can stuff a room up, even if all that is to discover just ONE sound that makes a track, I hate it. I hate all the mics and clumsy boom stands, the ugly soundproofing and all these contrived things. I hate all this stuff that makes us feel we're in control of a spaceship, when we're not. I hate how any setup turns into a mess eventually, with wires everywhere ready to strangle you as your pen falls off a chair and you have to reach under the desk where you shoved all the mess of wires, where there are more lights flashing from devices, illuminating your face of despair as you inhale clumps of dust which have been stuck between even more wires, laying like snakes along the ground. I hate wires!! And all the nasty angles of racks, and relentless lights and buttons of machines... Machines, endless machines, that do this or that, improve that or this... I hate it all!

Or at least, I've come to hate it!

Sound production and creation? Too many wires. Too many machines.

a pen is a machine, the way one grips it it acts as a lever  :clown:
The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

I can recommend bongos. No wires there.

This is just the video for you!

(actually, for anyone interested in modular systems / synth history documentaries, this is one of the best. The preview video linked by me only shows a tasty fraction of the 90 minute excellent film).

Patch.CV is another good one. A little bit more personal/inspiration driven, showing what a handful of different musicians are doing and a bit of what the modular community is like in the PNW.

...

At some point in the past I used to think I hated dealing with cables, PSUs, jacks going bad etc. and software was the One True Way. That was when I had cheap shit cables from Guitar Center, tangles of wall warts and power strips, crap plastic shelves or a messy desk instead of proper stands/racks, and the few times I went gigging I inevitably had a cable that crackled or cut out on me.

Today I've got 480HP of Eurorack plus a couple of other hardware synths and various toys, and I have been known to actually get excited over, yes, wires :P But everything is all tidy in racks and on stands and all plugged in, ready to go... except the actual patch that determines the behaviors and timbres anyway. That turns into this rat's nest of pure joy and inspiration :hihi:

I hang cables up in my studio just for decoration.
