I think a couple of devs left Ableton, but the program is being continually being developed. They're a little slower than some company's, but Live 10 is rock solid these days (for me).Markus Krause wrote: Fri Oct 23, 2020 4:25 am I tried to like Ableton and am using it for testing, but I don't like the workflow and layout. I am also not sure if there is still really active development on it, since the programmers have left to Bitwig.

This is me also. But I am keeping an eye on MuLab as it's the only thing that come close to the look and feel of Orion. I'll be interested to see the new clip launching feature when it's available. . .AnX wrote: Thu Oct 22, 2020 3:43 pm no, there isn't anything, which is why I still use it, and will do till I give all this up.

so in Cubase, my only issue was the MIDI sequencing itself which can't use patterns this is where Nora can help
basically needs a chord sequence which can be chopped with it (and Nora can use patterns) other parts of Cubase have pattern solution (step-designer, beat designer are both pattern-based ones in Cubase) other issue is the absence of some modulation framework which can be solved with MUX

Can anyone explain what was so great - and unique - about Orion? I love Synapse's products and can imagine it had some great features, but all the videos I've seen were really unappealing. It looked like a mixture of FL and Reason and probably not of the best features of either.
Anyone?

well for me personally, back in 2002, i had never touched a computer for music, im a guitarist first and foremost.antic604 wrote: Sun Oct 25, 2020 5:31 pm Can anyone explain what was so great - and unique - about Orion? one day i was getting a train, needed a mag for the journey, saw an issue of computer music, which sounded interesting.
it came with a demo of the original orion.
loaded that on the exmissus work computer (she is some big shot computer woman these days apparently) wondering how the hell a studio on a computer would work (previously, as i say, id played guitar, and had been in actual studios with tape and shit, and even 4 tracks seemed beyond a computer to me).
i was pleasantly surprised by both the ease of use and quality of the onboard bits, at this time i only had those and a cm freebie.
then it kind of grew and did and does pretty much everything you need, ok some bits not as fluidly as other hosts, but then other hosts do things a roundabout way that orion does in one click.
there are no perfect hosts, each is probably lacking something another has, but if you stick with something, you find ways to make it work for you.
constant switching searching for the best one, youll never learn a single one enough to have that full control. imo.
the only reason ive switched these days, i do a lot more audio than midi now, and orion was a little weaker there, but it had never intended to have audio, so i cant complain, as it wasnt there at all to begin with and the addition was fairly basic.
it could be linked to an audio editor though, so again there was an option for workaround.
and i hated reason and pt, which we had to use at college (some years later) both so convoluted to get the simplest things done.
then 10 or so years using pt in a studio
id have probably loved that job, if it wasnt for pro tools. and musicians

coming from a hardware background, it was a piece of cake to figure out
very similar to say roland stuff that had pattern banks, each soft synth had a bank of 64 patterns
everything goes into a hardware type mixer
the playlist is simple and effective
sure, it didn't have all the bells and whistles of some hosts, but i never needed those...
tried loads of other hosts, none of them ever clicked
it also came with some great synths and fx, so you didn't really need anything else to get you going
